Been paying £33 to o2 for 2 years for an iPhone 4, have been offered the following:

Apple iPhone 5 16GB Black, (24 M) £27 tariff (£17 for the Airtime plan and £10 for the handset plan), You'll get Unlimited minutes, Unlimited texts, 1 GB data with unlimited WiFi and the handset one off cost is £199.99 but for you I can waive £100.99 and give you the handset for just £99.

Works out as £747 for 2 years, which seems pretty crap to me (and hardly an 'upgrade' for a loyal member when all they can do is match current new customer deals with other providers).

I currently have an iPhone4 and it does what I need, so don't really need a new phone (though it could be an option as they're always nice aren't they)...

A few questions:

- What are most people paying monthly at the moment? I've seen good deals from Tesco mobile and Giffgaff, £10 a month kind of things.

- I don't use my phone much, always have got by on 300 mins, ultd texts and 500MB data, which realistically puts me in the PAYG/Sim only bracket correct?

- As for phones, how do you lot keep up to date with whats hot and whats not? A few mates have Nexus 4's and swear by them...

You arn't going to get a good deal on a current gen iPhone as the providers pay a lot of money for the handsets so have little wiggle room to negotiate.

I've got an ageing samsung s2, and the current phones don't wow me enough to upgrade, so have jumped on a £10 sim only deal with tesco.

As for questions 1 and 2, use a site like billmonitor to find the best tariff that suits your requirement e.g. Sim only for the minutes and data you're likely to use.

Remember that most people lock into tariffs that are vastly higher than what they use per month.

Thanks for that link, didn't know anything like that existed!

Is that the refresh tariff? I have signed up on that and as I get a 30% discount on the call charges I spend £22.90 per month.
