Six SATA 6 Gb/s connectors come from the Z87 chipset. The additional sixteen SAS/SATA ports are courtesy of an LSI SAS 3008 + SAS 3 x 24R controller. The board also features Thunderbolt, 802.11ac and dual Gigabit LAN.

its excessive but I guess it woould be good as a workstation maybe, allow for a lot of storage

A bit ott surely? Someone who needs that many drives would use a proper raid card with an external jbod. Imagine the amount of heat that would generate!

It kinda has a proper RAID controller built in, an LSI one at that.
