NSA has "back door" into Google, Apple, Facebook and others

That is always the most retarded statement in these discussions.

I have 'nothing to hide' from the authorities, it still doesn't mean that I would be happy with them having access to every detail of my personal life

I agree, i rapidly lose respect of anyone that says that, althrough it's MrBell we're talking about here, so no respect to lose anyway :p

It's irrelevant if they care or not, or if my conversations are interesting or not, I do not want the authorities to have the power to snoop into my life whenever they feel like it without any prior suspicion.

But what if they suspect someone of a serious crime, do you not think they should be able to request important and pertinent information from companies such as google? (For example, someone might have pictures of child abuse being sent on their gmail account)

i suspect that is a different case then them having the ability to snoop into what you are doing as they please.

They always find some way of getting around things. We only need suspicion and we can get whatever we want, from anyone, because your data is based here.

Let's all create our own massive DC and truecrypt the lot.

So it would be ok if they had prior suspicion....

Just as it is now, if they have suspicion they can apply to the courts for the right to intercept my information....what's the problem with that

I thought the American government/courts/corporations were all in on it together so what difference would that make? :p

Slightly contradicting reports - is this true?

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

On the other hand - not as 1984 as they suggest.

While the order itself does not include either the contents of messages or the personal information of the subscriber

They are allegedly targeting Dropbox next.

What does it matter? :p

OI ! :D I have lots of respect I have you know!

You are confusing me with one or more of our colourful CT posters on here :p

:p

It just strikes me as odd that people are OK as long as they get a US court to say "yes that is ok", which is merely a formality and means nothing if Prism is an all seeing eye run by the evil US government.

All this is well and good, but who's gonna stop them? Who's gonna say "you can't do that, stop snooping?"

Even if they do, what's to say they will?

I presume this has been wheeled out in time for Theresa May's sympathetic charter also, not that I expect it'll have a lot of difference either way because nobody actually seems to be able to prove if it a) helps in the fight against terrorism by giving explicit examples or b) damages someone's liberty - again by giving explicit examples.

Without a) or b) it's just another confirmation of something the tin foil hat brigade have (rightly, may I add) suspected for some time.

Nothing to hide and all that...

Honestly don't have a problem with any of this. If they catch some bad guys by doing it then it's worth it, right?

I sincerely hope this does not come as a surprise to anyone. The Media is making it out like some kind of shocking revelation while everyone in the Western world is just nodding and carrying on as usual. Do you honestly think that these online data repositories are not regulated in this manner? Don't make me laugh.
