AMD Talks “Better Coolers” On Next-Gen Radeon HD 8000 Series

AMD are miles behind NVidia with reference cooling solutions.

The MSI 7970 OC I had was like a Boeing 747 compared to my current EVGA 680GTX and because it never stayed at the same speed (varied with temperature) you could never get used to it. Some might say why not set fan speed manually or mess around with 3rd party programmes but you shouldn't have to do stuff like that after spending several hundred pound.

That's an issue with MSI's 7950's only, nothing to do with AMD at all.

I think you misunderstand.

MSI and EVGA are not reference coolers and MSI have had problems with theirs.

Looking at reviews there is no difference between none reference coolers AMD vs Nvidia

The original none GE version of the 7970 had a reference cooler that was just appalling from a db level. The GE one is an improvement, yet its still behind a 680 in terms of noise.

That is the biggest issue with my 7970, I have had it from launch, its a reference card, and my god does it put out some serious heat and noise, to the point where it literally heats my room more effectively than an electric heater.

The heat output won't change with a different cooler.

Watts are watts, they have to be dissipated in some way.

I found the 7970s I had to be a bit louder than my 680, but they also ran quite a bit cooler too (under load at least).
