It's normal, replacement will likely have the same issue.
i have a sapphire 7970 oc edition, it too has minor coil whine. seems to do it more on load up screens that when in an actual game. and sometimes if i tab out of a game and then click back on it, the coil whine will be worse than when i just tabbed out, strange huh? lol. i wouldn't worry about it unless its annoyingly loud.
if that's the case, and you bought it from ocuk, i'm sure they'll sort out a replacement for you.
Some people lately
Its not normal, its a common problem, fortunately one that i have never had with the 14 GPUs i have had in my personal rigs.
Well you must have a loud system which drowns out the noise then. I've had coil whine on every single graphics card I've ever owned. In recent memory... 8800 ultra, 560 ti, 3 gtx 570's, gtx 580, 7770, 6870, 650 ti, gtx 660, gtx 660 ti, gtx 670, 7950. Coil whine on every single one of them, 7950 was the worst.
Tried different power supplies etc, its unavoidable. Some people notice it, others don't.. but its always there to some degree.
Here's a video of typical coil whine, starts at 0.30 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB9uK-Tnc7I
It's not on all his other gpu videos as he used furmark before, in this video its heaven benchmark. Coilwhine happens because of load on the gpu in conjunction with frame rate so basically only 'real' gaming applications. Bitcoin/furmark etc do not normally cause coil whine even though they stress the gpu a lot.
All you have done is proved that in your personnel experience all your cards have Coilwhine i never contested that but don't try to tell me about my experience, my Rig and that im just not noticing it.
I have been through so many different motherboards, gpu's and power supply combinations that I am 100 percent certain every gpu has coil whine. Of course it only happens when gaming, maybe you have headphones on and can't hear it?
AFAIK the 5970's aren't exactly quiet cards either so they might hide it or maybe you just got lucky and your 2 cards have no whineWhat were the other 14 gpus? Perhaps older cards didn't have coil whine, but all modern ones most certainly do.
Just trying to give sound advice to the OP. Unless its exceptionally bad then its not a fault like he thinks it is. I guarantee if he returns it for a replacement it will make the same noises so will be wasting his time.
You really should stop dictating because you're to busy dictating and not listening or observing when it comes to other peoples setups which you are not personally in front of.
Ok, I'll stop dictating and just roll my eyes
We'll have to agree to disagree it seems as I don't believe you had 3 7950's with no coil whine.
I've had 2 7950's and 2 7950's without itmy system is water cooled so I would hear if it was there.

Got new info from AMD that I'm allowed to share. AMD has identified a potential compatibility issue with a specific manufacturer’s hardware and is working closely with them to resolve the issue. The issue is receiving the highest attention at AMD and they hope to have a solution very shortly. AMD wants to thank all the users that have reported this problem, their feedback has been really valuable for them.
What you believe and what actually is can be worlds apart.

This guy had more motherboard than most and he would not listen to suggestions that about CF issues he was having was motherboard related initially by the users who were not having issues, it turns out that me and the other users were right.

All on low. I water cool for near silence, not for speed. I don't play with headphones either.
I don't want to get into an argument but that's completely unrelated to coil whine, unless you trying to say that you're always right?
I bought a graphics card second hand that had coil whine. I contacted the seller and he was adamant that he never heard it. I tried several different power supplies, motherboards and even another house. Coil whine was still there.
In my opinion it all depends on the environment the card is in. Ambient noise, case fans, how close you are to the pc. If you put headphones on right before launching a game there's a good chance you'll never hear it. This is just my opinion though, I accept that you are unable to hear it, but as far as I'm concerned every single graphics has coil whine to some degree.

I'm out. Sunny Saturday and better things to do than discuss how silent my PC is (or er isnt!)![]()
