Lake Garda?

I'm thinking of flying to Bergamo, renting a car and driving to Lake Garda.

I'd like to visit Gardaland and see as much gorgeous scenery as I possibly can.

Has anyone done this and can offer me advice on places to stay, eat, visit?

How much spending money would be appropriate for two people for a week?

I'm thinking of going in July if that helps.

Cheers.

I went camping near Lake Garda once. A massive storm rolled down off the Alps during the night and flattened pretty much every tent in the campsite except mine. It was an interesting night, seeing the tent pegs ping out of the ground one by one.

Isnt Lake Garda where George Clooney hangs out??...could always go and pay him a visit:p:D

Lake Como is where Clooney lives :p

The girlfriend and I went to Garda last year. Lovely place. A bit more touristy than we'd imagined but still really nice and chilled out. In fact touristy isn't the word, I think in my mind I'd just imagined a secluded hotel by the lake etc, whereas obviously there's a lot more there!

We stayed here and would definitely recommend it:

I can post more info/pics if you like when I have more time. I think there's some on my flixkr actually. Link below.

Oh, if you're going to those parts then a trip to Verona is worthwhile too¡

Was there just the other week, we stayed in Limone, but Riva Del Garda is beautiful and has the edge I reckon- no more expensive than anywhere else.

With scenery like this, it's well worth a look.

If you are a bond fan you could find the stretch of road they used at the beginning of Quantum of Solace and also the bar that has the door of his Aston Martin mounted on the wall.

I went there in the 90's on a family camping holiday, it's well nice, we watched F1 in the campsite bar, I don't remember much else.

Gets good reviews on trip advisor, I'd really like to avoid the touristy areas. I'm looking for exactly what you described. Secluded hotel with a lake and mountain view. I don't mind being secluded as I plan to hire a car to drive to other areas and visit a few places. I plan to visit Gardaland if its worth it and perhaps some mountain scenic drive.

The guy above mentioned gargnano, the reviews say this is quiet and sounds ideal.

I'm open to suggestions though, what airport did you fly into and how did you get to Garda?

Does everyone think I'm doing the right thing flying to bergamo and driving? As opposed to getting a transfer/coach/public transport.

If I wasn't getting a car, I'd probably want to be more central to things as I wouldn't have the car.

Hotel Gardinia is excellent and unfussy, not hugely expensive, very clean and the staff are amazing. Don't forget to take the ferry, it stops off at places of interest and you can hop on and off where ever you fancy. Malcesine is well worth stopping off at, beautiful surroundings. You'd be hard pushed to eat anywhere "bad", some of the shore front places are overpriced and very touristy, have a walk about and see where is buzzing away from the water :) Though I really enjoyed everywhere round the lake (been twice) it's not really my scene. Verona is only a short spin away and dripping with history, restaurants and entertainment.

Oh and loads of Germans, forget sunbathing :D

Haha on the Germans!

Excellent post, thanks very much!

We're looking to book in the next few days. I'll look into the ferry, sounds great.

Another thing just popped into my head, Bardolino Superiore is amazing, if you like your reds.

I don't recall the area being hugely expensive, but I've been about capital cities all my life, and you can certainly spend more and see less in the likes of London and Dublin.

Went there a few years ago. Wasn't too expenisve and very nice place to relax. Loved the local wine and people were generally friendly.

I lost my cap when I took a speed boat out, its blue, have a look for me ;)
