...from Itunes? I'm guessing this is the right place to put this up. Since roughly the mid 90's i've been heavily downloading all my media. to which 90% of all of it had been deleted because of hard drive failures or me just being stupid and deleting it. But thats not what im on about.

Since the closure of a well known nzb website, i've been finding it stupidly hard to download any media. I even went back to torrents and found that just as bad along with the horrendous download speeds.

So i've started getting stuff from Itunes, I dont really mind buying from them. Buying media for me was never the problem, it was the fact i could get anything almost instantly, being free was only a perk. My interweb isnt amazing so streaming in 'HD' isnt possible. I've tried netflix, that was ok, but the amount of good stuff to watch was pretty bad. i've heard LoveFilm is even worse? I dont know too much about BlinkBox, Just as bad? better?

So before i get too far into buying from itunes, i thought i should ask here. What other options do i have? How do you all get your media?

Buy hard copies from amazon for cheap. Rip an image of the disc, rip the disc to your favourite music/video format.

Store actual hard copy as a hard archive, store image as your soft archive, use your ripped format on all your devices.

All depends if you are happy with apples direction.
If you are then it's not an issue.
You just have to realise you're stuck with apple products or conventional windows desktop.

Other options
Is xbox movies
Buy physical and rip
Sky go extra + netflix and similar services

I'm mainly netflix, skygo etc now and buy the odd thing from xbox movies if I know I'm going to have shoddy wifi/3G, or just pre download on sky go extra.

It really depends what devices you want/have and how/where you watch stuff.

Well, you've both made good points. Buying the hard copy is usually only around £3-4 more expensive, but id get to play on all formats. I dont really want to be stuck watching stuff on apple products. least if i rip my own i can choose what i want to play them on. It's really for storing stuff upstairs and watching them downstairs.

I still use netflix now and again for stuff, because its not bad for some things. Guess i'll need to buy an external blu ray rw drive then!

Cheers for the help guys.

Am I right in thinking there's still no content delivery for 1080P? Netflix looks like it's planning to start but seems like it won't be in the UK for a while?

Netflix does 1080p but the bitrate obviously isn't upto blue ray.
They now do superHD which is a higher bit rate 1080p on certain devices. Needs a 6-8mb connection. Even this isn't blu-ray quality.

Yeah I know of some, but never found any as good a the matrix. Plus I totally forgot that LoveFilm can send the actual hard copy's of movies. So I most definitely won't be ripping each movie I get haha ;)

I'll also be buying my own copies of some movies, because I've somehow got it in my head that steelbooks are awesome and I should buy loads of them. So I've got jaws, the hobbit and pitch black coming haha.

I buy the very odd bit of music/apps off iTunes. Probably spent £20 in total over the last few years. I don't like locking myself in. Once my iPhone contract is up I'm seriously going to look at the Galaxy. As I have zero allegiance to any manufacturer/platform, I'll go with what gives me the best bang for buck.

music wise if i'm buyign digitally i nearly always buy from amazon now , purely down to the fact it's drm free and is 320 kps as standard.

if i'm after a hi-def source i always go to hdtracks...

ive got lovefilm to watch on the kindle when a got a quiet time , and currently picked up a £1 / month nowtv sub for 3 months for movies ....which imo has a stunning streaming pic

Yeah the more i think about it, the more i regret buying most the things from itunes. Apart from Gimm, i love the fact you can buy a season and after each episode has aired, you can download it. Instead of waiting till its released. The more i use LoveFilm the more i like it haha. Streaming wise its not amazing, but i've gone for the full package so i can hopefully get The Last Of Us at the weekend and play that, then i can downgrade the package. I just need to get out of this steelbook phase because i spent an arm and a leg on them over the past week. no more. could have seriously bumped up my blu ray collection.

But cheers Talon, i'll have a look at hdtracks.

kobi in regards hdtracks . you will need a vpn to spoof you ip address and also make your mail address as somewher in the usa... i use apples headquaters :P

securitykiss is a good one for 20gb a month on basic package

I always buy physical - At least then if anything goes wrong with a hdd, I still have the cd etc to rip from

Same here. CDs from amazon, gives you uncompressed music, physical back up, booklet and often cheaper. The exception is if I get chance of downloading a HD version off Linn Records site. Generally given up with HD tracks.
All is then stored in FLAC format on a 2 disc RAID NAS, which is backed up on a USB hard drive once a month.
Streamed from the NAS running twonky media server to two Linn DS players.

Cd's then can ripped again and added to iTunes library on a laptop for loading onto portable/phone etc.

Blurays we have two delivered a month from love film. We have 4.5 meg download speed, so not going to try streaming. Plus I want the best sound and picture options, so physical disc it has to be.
Can't see the point of ripping them either, only whatch them once, can easily request it again if needed.

yeah anything bought to itunes is locked to apple products because of DRM .. which is why i use amazon ... they will still work with itunes if i wish it or any other device / player
