4770 Hot Hot Hot

Well it looks like the board is faulty or just whacking wayyy too much voltage through the cpu with LLC. Changed back to my DZ87KLT-75K and it seems to be a lot better. Currently running a Coolit LC with the fan barely audible and its sitting at 77degrees max at stock with the 4770K. So time to have a bit of a play.

Agree, I generally prime 1 pass at a higher clock or lower voltage than I intend to use (depending on the muppet auto overclock system)

5 hours video encoding is more constructive than just needlessly cooking everything !

+1.

I think people get so caught up in it all. Which is part of the fun for the hobbyist, other than that pointless.

they might not overclock so well but you have to remember clock for clock they are slightly faster,so no need to try for a big overclock

that's not getting away from some chips do run silly hot

if I was building a new system - theres only 2 real options I'd consider

(1) 4770k/4670k and Z87
(2) 3930k and 2011 socket

I'd love (2) - but not sure I can justify the cost of hex-core

wazza - I love your sig that's my favourite film. brilliant. the home scene is the best
but back on track Intel needed to put something special out. The new consoles are coming out at the end of the year - what reason is there for buying a Haswell chip for a desktop gaming pc

anyone got a temp profile for the stock heatsink? read that hw throttles at stock on the stock heatisnk in a sealed case!

IBT is a chip killer, and should not be used. Intel engineers shiver at the thought of what people do with IBT.

Intel engineers are the guys that wrote the Linpack library that IBT uses. This library was specifically designed to take full advantage of what the Intel hardware is capable of. That's why it is a good utility to quickly check if your overclocked CPU is stable.

In general how much more expensive is the 2nd option compared to the first option ?

circa 200 more for cpu ? at least 50-60 more for mobo at least + extra 2 channels of RAM (if you weren't going for 4 sticks anyway)

so about 300 ish more I'd say

most of that being extra cpu cost

Hmmm around say £300-£350 extra isn't bad if considering that the new rig is going to be used for about 4 years. Plus the quad channel memory and 2 extra cores are always nice:cool:

It is nearly double the cost though. lol. Unless you are video encoding, by the time majority apps and games start making use of those extra cores you will be able to afford to buy the top mainstream mobo/cpu package with the extra money and have that fun and excitement of opening that new shiny box :p

Nah but in all seriousness, if you it makes you happy go for it. That is what matters most at the end :)

I could have went Ivy and got a high clocking chip which would be same as a haswell in terms of performance, but it made me more happy to go for a new mobo and new cpu. In the end it may be less performance if I get a poor clocking cpu, but it will still make me more happy ;)

thinking of it in terms of a new GPU put me off when I considered it

how much would I use a new GPU ? (if I was to upgrade it)

how often would I really NEED hex-core ?

I went 3770k and Gene V and have been very pleased

Yes it might be more expensive, but l built a good x58 and its still going, so x79 is a better option, that's my next build.

Definitely agree on this. I still have my x58 parts...gonna give them to my dad I think. Don't really want to sell...their like part of the family.
