I just bought 2 PowerColor 6950, and i can see from reviews of the cards, they can be flashed to 6970, which i would like to try.

However, they do not have a BIOS switch, which is why i wanna make sure what i am doing. I assume, if the BIOS corrupts on one card, i can slap the 2nd in and run crossfire, and flash the corrupted back to 6950?

My advice is NO! AMD stopped that with later 6950's by lasering off the 6970 part, if you have one of those you will brick it.

Edit- if they have dual BIOS you can try, as long as you have one BIOS that never gets touched.

Flashing one BIOS will not affect the other.

It does only have one BIOS :( But the guy i bought it from, said they were 3 years old, so it should be one of the older 6590s?

If it doesn't work, can't i just flash it back to the original by putting the other card in and run crossfire, and flash it back?

Edit: Tried changing the BIOS to have unlocked shaders, but that doesn't seem to work :(

Wait, hu? it has a switch (1 and 2?) 1 is BIOS 1 and 2 is 2, switch it to 2 and flash, not working switch it back to 1. also flash 2 back if you can.

So is that ^^^^^ what you did? what happened? not booting, not showing what you thought in GPU-Z, what?:)

If you brick it you should be able to use the other graphics card (or even one on your motherboard if you have it) to boot and reflash the bricked one.

(I had to do the same with my 7950 a few weeks ago).

edit: whoa this is my first post, I didn't realise I had lurked for so long :O

Makes an entrance with a useful post, welcome in from out of the shadows :)

Nothing quite gets you on the edge of your seat like flashing a GPU without the aid of a dual BIOS switch.

But yes, as long as you back up your original BIOS, then flash each card individually then you at least have a fail safe. Although obviously, you do so at your own risk lol. Best of luck.

i have the sapphire dual fan edition 6950 which has the bios switch, but it refuses to unlock the shaders when flashed
