Hi All,

mums birthday coming up and she's after a tablet, so far she has suggested a Kindle fire or a KF HD. they seem to be good had a play on one at a store. but can't help but think a kindle is closing her off to Amazons and its market place when buying stuff. so is there any thing else people would suggest?

im equally unchuffed with tablets that seem to be just glorified big Mobile phones. Samsung's really felt like this when i played on them, she has an S3 and it was like using a worse version of this.

anyway i am open for balanced suggestions, she will be mainly using it for reading books, surfing the web and using it maybe to watch stuff or listen to music.

thx

ok well she is after a 10" tablet not a 7" now

i'm rather impressed with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z anyone own one or used one for a bit. thoughts?

BTW thanks for the previous comment much appreciated guys.

ok so i went to a store and played on the Xperia and...didn't like it. the main reason was it was just to slow pinch zooming in and and felt jerky when moving around in chrome. I noticed that same thing on a few video reviews ,the touch just isnt as responsive as say the nexus or the Ipad. so no thankyou lovely design though but i'd personally prefer a tab that worked smoothly to look at the net. anyway so i have now pretty much decided on the Nexus 10 for my mum.

Anyone here own a Nexus 10 tablet here? thoughts or anything you really don't like about it?

Forget the Nexus and get an iPad or iPad mini, far more user friendly for Mum.

My wife swapped her Nexus 7 for an iPad. I persuaded her to go for the Nexus in the first place.
After using the Nexus for a few weeks and now the iPad mini, it is streets ahead in providing a pleasurable tablet experience.

Nexus 10 is probably the better tablet for reading books and so on, but the Xperia Z is a really good tablet with a good weight and feel, great screen, general premium feel compared to most tablets.

There was a firmware update for the touch response just before the Z was released so sounds like the store one doesn't have it - theres absolutely no issues with that on any I've had my hands on in the flesh.

EDIT: I have both the Nexus 10 and Xperia Z here and I know skyfall and a couple of others do also so fire away if you have any specific questions.

We had all the updates on our Nexus 7 and the thing lagged everywhere. Browsing was truly awful compaired to browsing on the iPad. Basically as you described jerky scrolling through pages or zooming on and out. Also flash was hit and miss. The OcUK youtube embedded videos never showed for one.
I tried all the browsers on the Nexus, the best I found was Dolphin Browser with jetpack addon and still it was a painful experience compaired to the same browsers on iPad.

I was all sold on the Nexus hence why I convinced the Mrs that it was the tablet to get, if anybody tried to convince me otherwise now I would laugh in their faces. Worst tech descision I have made in a decade going with it.

Besides; Joanne Lumley uses the iPad.

Very happy with my Nexus 10. Does everything it says on the tin, with the possible exception of dodgy voice recognition in some of the apps. This may be summat to do wi' bein' from t'north 'owever :)

personally the ipad interface is so dull compared to the Nexus with a load of lovely widgets. the ipad 4 is a extra £100 right? price is another factor. in my mind though i am still muling over going for the ipad4 for her. but there is a lot to like about the nexus from what i have seen. have about a week to make up my mind and gather all the review and weight up the pros and cons for each. the ipad mini is too small i feel so its needs to be at least 10"

You can't go wrong with the Nexus 10 IMO, my Z gets used more by me but thats partly due to having bought the 10 for family use and the Z was for me personally, that said when having the option of both I tend to pickup the Z, not that theres anything wrong with the 10, just find the Z more comfortable to hold and has a few feature I use the 10 doesn't.

Come back when you have spent a good bit of time with both, one is clearly superior; no matter what Google try and tell you. I tried them as I believed the hype. God you people must be poor, or have an inherent hatred for Apple. ;)
Good luck with your decision.

*Edit. I just thought to say maybe the Nexus 10 does not have all the problems I encountered on our fully updated (I believe we were on JB 4.2.2) Nexus 7.

Oh go on one more try to stop you making a mistake. You say boring interface and I can't disagree, though will say ios7 offers some change to that. Personally I would rather have a boring interface that does what I want when I want it to and in the quickest, smoothest possible way.
Again all the best with your decision?

Never had any real problems with the 10 but never tried the 7. Chrome can be a bit lumpy tho the last couple of updates sorted the really bad lag where you couldn't even scroll around a web page properly while its loading. There are better browsers tho, infact even the stock gingerbread browser is better imo.

Chrome aside (and thats easily sorted) the Xperia has been nothing but quick and smooth for me.

My wife (54) thinks exactly the opposite.
She used to bring her iPad home from work but now thinks the Nexus is far easier.
