Open top car for under £5K?

In before MX-......damn.

Surely a £5k S2k is going to be pretty ropey?

A friend of mine has just picked up an 02 plate for £5200 and it's faultless, drives like new and with only 60k on it.

It reallt does depend on how hard your willing to look or if you just jump the gun and buy the first one you see.

Probably now I think about it...I got a decent-ish 2004 one for £5600 before Christmas but that seemed very much the exception.

Early ones from 2002-2003 can be had pretty cheaply but most look a bit tired by now sadly...however nice ones will come up occasionally. Can't help but think you'll struggle to find a good one for this sort of money at this time of year. In winter, before Christmas...much more a buyers market.

Yep nice weather and an engine that can rev to 9 odd k and with the roof down will bump the price up.

I was with my friend today after he had fitted a new exhaust and intake, the sound is just

Why you'd get an MX5 over an S2000 is beyond me.

Perhaps the same reason you'd buy a Focus 1.6 over a Civic Type R?

The S2000 is another league to the MX5 - it's faster, it has a better engine, its just... better. But it's also more expensive, too - more expensive to buy, more expensive to insure, etc etc.

The MX5 is a cheap and fun little Roadster which doesn't break the bank, the S2000 is a genuine performance car.

The OP has told us nothing other than he wants an 'open top car' so unless he's after big performance then an MX5 fits the bill nicely without generating much cost.

£5k budget means you don't need to get the one with a lawn mower engine.

Yea, if you are happy to own an older car than you otherwise would. Perhaps he is, perhaps he isn't - many people are not therefore the MX5 often makes a lot of sense.

5k is an odd amount of money for an MX, so wouldn't spend that much, don't think you can get a good enough MK3 for that little cash, plus the early cars look pants.

3.5 to 4k gets you a nice late MK2.5 VT-Sport, great car, and costs about as much to run as a potato.

I think it'd have to be an MX5 if it's a 2 seat, 2 door you're after. Have had one and it was a quality car. In the MK3, mind that the drain hole doesn't get blocked, else your footwells will get wet in the rain!

4 seater - You might be able to find an bmw e46 cab or audi a4?

MG TF? If you just want a bit of open top motoring in the summer?

Not as good handling wise as MX5, in my opinion looks 100x better :)
