My Leadtek 8800 ultra leviathan that cost me a small fortune back in the day has died on me today i think!

I am getting artifacts across my bios loading screen and windows will not boot without blue screening me, except into safemode where upon i get the following when i attempt to access the card using winfox

Error code:NvAPI_EnumPhysicalGPUs = -6

google is about as useful as a chocolate teapot for solving this, but I am thinking it has finally pegged it. So essentially I need to get a new gpu.

I am several years behind on what is good or bad in the computer graphics world as you can imagine with having such an old gpu, so I kindly ask if anyone can recommend me a good brand and card to get please.

Is nvidia still beating ati like it used to? is that the way to go?

I essentially want a card that will play warcraft with no problems on a 24inch monitor and will give me a lovely smooth framerate for FPS's.

The motherboard is an gigabyte x38t-dq6 if that helps with an antec 900 case (tight space!).

Thank you very much in advance for any help, apologies for the rambling!

What sort of budget are you looking at?
Are you going to be overclocking the new card?

When you say warcraft is that world of warcraft?

I did mean world of warcraft sorry. Budget would probably be around 300 but will spend more or much less if the selling point is good, I really have no idea how the new cards compare to the 8800. Ideally i want something that is better than the 8800. I won't be over clocking, would prefer a card that is good straight out of the box.

Cheers

Sorry forgot to ask is your QX9650 at stock or overclocked?

I would imagine that a 7950 or 670/new 760ti depending on when they get here would be good for you as something faster wouldn't really be of benefit with your currant CPU and a lot dearer for not a lot more performance.

I believe WOW still favours Nvidia over AMD cards so may be a 670/new 760ti rather than the 7950.

It is a shame that eh 760ti isn't here already as that would probably be the best card for you, it will almost certainly be faster than the 7950 at stock settings, depends how long you are willing to wait.

For that kind of money, you're either looking at an NVidia 670, or an AMD 7950 and £50 change (both perform about the same across a range of games). You're also only a few quid off a 7970 (about 5-10% quicker than a 7950 out of the box) which is probably overkill for a single screen but if you're planning on keeping your next GPU as long as your Ultra it might be worth spending the extra.

You might find any of these cards being held back a little by your CPU. Are you planning on upgrading the rest of your system while you own your next GPU? If not, I'd look more towards to the 7870 and save yourself £150.

Just to give you an idea of how these line up compared to your 8800 Ultra (and each other): http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-review,review-32693-7.html
As you can see, you'd only need to spend £100 to get the same level of performance as your 8800 Ultra, so any of the above will be a very noticeable improvement over your current setup. :D

Yes any midrange card will run WOW but if you want maximum details and 4/8*AA then you will need something more.

It'll more likely be the CPU that drags frame rates down. Even if he gets a GTX 780, he may get 300 fps looking at the sky in the middle of Barrens but I doubt he'll hold 60FPS in 25man+ raids with a QX9650.

I went from 8800 ultras to a 7950, great upgrade cheap price. If ya then decide to upgrade the rest of your PC in the future ya can just get another 7950 and xfire um. If you dont intend on keeping the card for a future build i would prolly got for summat lower like a 7870 as i guess youll be cpu bottlenecked atm.

And I thought my 8800 GTX lasted long – in fairness you must have gotten a good run out of your card. Either a 670 or a 7950 would be a pretty sweet upgrade that should meet your needs for a good while.
