Hi all

Acquired my first ever Android phone yesterday, Samsung Galaxy S4.

Any Do's and Dont's for a first time Android owner ??

The multitude of settings and apps seems a bit daunting but im sure ill get used to it

Whats The essential apps/widgets for a newcomer to android to install on first day etc ?

Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks

Do

-Use your Gmail account with everything - makes it much easier if you switch
-Take the time to work out how to use it, dont call it crap because you cant be bothered to spend 5 minutes to figure it out (as a guy at work does)
-As for apps, chrome beta for browser syncing, Google + if you use it Google Currents for a reader

Dont

-Put the screen on full brightness, you will make the battery last 5 seconds ;)
-Install random APKs without knowing their origin

Take the time to work out mobile data and sync settings so you don't go blasting through tons of data - even if your on a decent data plan some of it can kill battery life and default behavior isn't necessarily needed.

First few days are quite daunting but theres a point once you get past everything falls into place and you can figure out anything else fairly easily.

To expand on this:
Transfer all your contacts onto Google Contacts which means you will never lose them and make regular backups on the computer Google Contacts just in case (it pains me when I hear people say they lost all their contacts in their phone).

As Dimple has said. Enable backing up of contacts to Google. So many times I've seen posts on Facebook asking people for phone numbers due to a lost/wiped phone. Never understood why people don't back up.

If you like taking photos, i can recommend Dropbox for backing them up. Set it to back up only on WiFi, and you're good to go.

Some really good advice there ! Thanks a million times over :)

I'm on a unlimited Data plan with 3 so at least i wont get any unexpected charges that way :P

Regards installing apps, how do i go about making sure what I'm installing is safe etc

Cheers again

biggest dont that a lot of androidnewbies need to know? DONT install task manager/app killer etc.

Being fully aware of how android works in regards to caching inactive apps, etc. there have been times when I've needed to kill misbehaving apps so it annoys me when this is hidden away or restricted.

Do - Enjoy it

Don't - Go back to Apple or Windows etc :D

Seriously though I have used Apple devices for year and was confused to start with but now can't remember how I managed to be so restricted before, just take your time to learn and understand the OS and device

But even then, bringing up the task manager and swiping the app away would suffice surely? Samsung Cloud like to be the default for a few things they perhaps shouldn't - namely contacts, calendar entries etc... I'd recommend you use google for this over samsung because should you ever go away from Samsung devices you can still use contacts.google.com etc...

do:

unlock bootloader
root it
install cerberus (full version hidden within system by flashing zip file in recovery)
buy a decent case and screen protector
enjoy the experience

dont:

sell it on and buy an apple / windows / blackberry / symbian device

would you mind explaining the first 3 a little more, i saw the cerberus app on the play store but a little unsure on "unlocking bootloader" and "root it"

Cheers

I wouldn't bother with any of that tbh. Or the screen protector/case. Just find a keyboard you like, along with some widgets that will be of use and away you go.

Also play around with Tasker (a powerful Android app).
