No such thing as a free lunch

I wonder if the school hadn't been a privately funded state institution whether the rules in place would be as harsh.

Somehow I can't see a fully state funded (or indeed a fully private) school being as draconian in their rules...

Doesn't really change much, just means the parents are at fault - it still doesn't excuse allowing a child to go hungry (as the child is not at fault).

Well the sortof same thing happened to me when I was at School. My folks had forgotten to give me my lunch money as they were a bit under stress with bills etc and with it being winter made things a lot worse (Mum and Dad used to be ice cream van traders) They sent me home at lunch. So I had to walk home, in the snow for about 4-5 streets crossing roads etc. You may not think that's is that bad but I was 5.. Yep 5 years old and they refused to give me school dinner because one day my parents had forgotten to give me dinner money. My dad went ballistic and stormed to the school. Don't remember much else about it as it was *Gulp* almost 35 years ago..

Starving the kid because they didn't have lunch money is absurd. Really shocking.

Missing one meal does not constitute as "starving". As pointed out, the parents are at fault for ignoring the schools warnings. There really is no issue here. Maybe his pride was a little shaken from being refused the meal, but missing one meal is one big non event.

They had notified them multiple times, he didn't pay.. kid doesn't get a meal.

Really dont see the issue, be responsible parents and you wont have an issue.

Did the above people even read the article :S

That's all I could think

Complete non-issue... Parents should have acted quicker

It must have been a slow news day if this story found its way on the BBC.

Rules are rules but the staff ought to be able to use their discretion, while the child won't starve he will not have the same concentration levels for the rest of the afternoon. Other then that I don't really have an opinion about the story, frankly I'm wondering how or why this even got to national press.

this really... its only small amounts but if they ignored it and just let a debit run up then they'd be faffing about chasing debts at the end of the year, not collecting on all of them and so the overall cost for everyone would increase.

If they've contacted the parents to warn them and they've already allowed him a meal after they've gone into debit then I don't see a huge issue... they presumably still have bread and apples available etc.. so the kid doesn't actually go hungry rather...

The Dad is an idiot... taking both his son and his other child out of school over this... seemingly no thought as to whether the other child has friends her/she might now miss etc... but rather a spiteful attempt to try and strike back at the school because his son cried over a missed lunch... resigning as governor, pulling both kids out and crying to the papers is a bit pathetic.

don't worry guys it's only the working class parents that get effected everyone else gets free school meals.

we're all in this together!

his father has a job! lets punish him by not giving him a meal.... I'm surprised the EU haven't made school meals a human right tbh

Punishing a child because his parents have not send the correct money is the dumbest **** I ever heard for all the school know that kid didn't have any breakfast either and went a full school day hungry and probably picked on by the kids who get free school meals
