There were rumours about this after Arkham City. Now they have been confirmed:

Official Press Release
First screenshots released

I know there is a post in the Console thread. But As I didn't see one in here (and it is being released on PC), I thought, why not?

The two main concerns are that Rocksteady and Paul Dini are no longer involved in the developing and creating of the game. And also that most would have preferred something after Arkham City as opposed to a prequel.

In the meantime...discuss.

Prototype main designer is not exactly a vote of confidence  but it uses the same modified Unreal Engine Rocksteady used on Arkham City so the tech should be solid as long as they drop DX11 or optimise it this time (unlikely as Rocksteady could not fix & Nvidia no longer seem to care unless you bought a GTX680 or higher)

But it also re-uses some of Arkham City's locations apparently so even though they are saying its bigger than Arkham City that's not hard when that game world was actually pretty small & most of it outside of the city scape was small interior locations as the game engine was clearly struggling with the large exteriors.

Rocksteady are rumoured to be hard at work on a true Arkham next gen sequel due in 2014 now that could be something to look forward to ;)

Please don't mess it up great games so far. Loved the first and the second they really added to it and made it very fun. Whole thing was so fluent and the combat is pretty much the bench mark now for most of the games I play.

I seriously can not wait for this! No game can grip me quite the same way ever since playing the first two, they are just unbelievably good games.

A bit weird how this is a prequel yet batman's suit looks more high tech and he looks older :p :D

I know...... but either way it is very impressive and has got me extremely hyped for the game now. Batman AC also had a CGI trailer like the above and iirc AA did too.

As long as they can keep similar gameplay to arkham city and have as epic of a storyline, script etc. then this will be GOTY for me without a doubt.

As long as they don't attempt to change the core gameplay mechanics - and lets be honest, they would have to be mental to do so - then it should be at the very least a solid 7/10. If they get the story and pacing correct as was the case with the first 2 (Asylum more so than City IMO) then it will be an excellent 9/10 and a game of the year candidate.

Either way, its a 100% purchase from me.

Proper gameplay footage now (PS3 only at this stage) but it looks an awful lot like a slightly different Arkham City game world not in a good way either

Guess this will have to do until the proper Rocksteady Batman game comes in 2015 but it re-uses a lot of the Arkham City map & I even spotted some Arkham Asylum locations in the game trailer posted above

It looks pretty much exactly the same as arkham city but set in gotham city. Not that it bothers me too much as the batman games are probably my favourite games ever and AC was already pretty much perfect imo, honestly can't think of what they could have done to make it even better.

What part of gotham city looked the same as the arkham asylum map/locations?

Although it is worth baring in mind that this is a prequel, long before AC so even if they have got that exact same area of AC in the new batman game, it will have a different feel/look to it i.e. as they said, AC was very run down (and even in AC at the start, Bruce's campaign against the new prison location was about bringing that part of Gotham back to the "glory" days), so in some ways , it will be kind of cool to see what it was like before it became the new "prison". TBH they couldn't really leave it out or completely redesign that specific area anyway, as it is part of Gotham city :p Supposedly the map is huge, you even have to make use of the "fast travel" due to the size.

The main things that makes the games for me is the story line, script and gameplay so if they can keep those areas to the same standard but with improvements (think the improved combat system sounds great, ninjas being able to counter your moves ) then I will be very happy!

I wonder if they'll sort the DX11 issues and stuttering they didn't bother to fix in the last game.

I for one won't be pre ordering. I'll be waiting to see how runs and plays before buying this time.

It's a shame really because I rally enjoyed the first game and the second one barring the stuttering.

Please don't mess this up, I've bashed through Arkham Asylum this week and I'm quite far into Arkham City and they unbelievably good. No doubt that they won't change the formula too much, the gameplay upgrade from Asylum > City was great, and if they can at least emulate the goodness of City with a few added features that'd be ace.

And Deathstroke... Oh em gee! :D

The funny thing is, I had no stuttering etc. issues at all with my 4850 512MB card, everything on max except motion blur turned of.

Then I got a 7850 2GB card and even with dx 11 etc. turned of, I encountered some stuttering every now and then, wasn't too bad though.

But annoying a worse card could run the game a lot smoother than what a much better and newer card could

Personally didn't give a toss about DX 11 as it added nothing to the visuals except when you looked extremely closely at gargoyles and the plants! :p

The DX 11 didn't bother me but I had stuttering on a GTX 470, 560, 560 SLI and a 580. From the lowest to the highest settings, even after a format and clean install of Windows and various different drivers.

Haven't tried it on my GTX 680 yet.
