Do you think a 7850 will max Rome Total War 2 @1080p

They're keeping the requirements low. I wouldn't worry if it doesn't look good on release as CA have been known to release garbage and heavily improve it. Empire anyone?

Well worth the wait though, Empire remains my favourite Total War to date :) (followed by Rome)

Yeah, I'm using a 7950 and I cannot max out a good few of my games. I can max out Shogun 2 and Napoleon though, so hopefully I can push this close to the max. Total War games tend to be well optimised so with a 7850 it will still look superb and run well, even if your only running at 'High' or 'Very High' and not 'Ultra'.

But when 'maxing' your game settings take you from 97% image quality to 100%, at the cost of needing 100% more GPU power, then most people will scale back to 97% and be happy.

In which case the 7850 is enough...

They're optimisation has been improving very much over the years.

My 5850 struggled (at first at least) with Empire, but I can play Shogun 2 at 1080p, Dx11, Very High (with the odd Ultra) settings smooth as butter!

I hope to upgrade to something like a 7870 or such (depending prices and what's out) later this year and fully expect to max (or very close) Rome 2 :)

Don't think people here are taking into consideration what the games run like when in an actual battle with 10+ full units, game hemorrhages frames pretty badly.

It's hard to quantify performance in a game like Total War. Back in the day my old E6400 @ 3Ghz and 8800GT played RTW just fine on max details, then I started to mod the game - SPQR, massive battles which hammered performance.

To put it another way the game will be as demanding as you want it to be. Personally I'm going to mod the game as soon as can the biggest armies possible just to see if a 3570K/670 can cope, Shogun 2 is butter smooth but I do expect the Rome 2 to be more demanding even if the engine is more efficient.

Darth mod brings a 3570k/670gtx machine to it's knees in Shogun 2, frames drop from 60+ to below 30 when you have a few units on screen and zoom in. Not sure if that's bad optimization on the mod creators part or Creative's but it doesn't run as well as it should. A 3570k is powerful enough to run the game at 3x speed with zero stuttering and a 670 can easily render thousands of individual soldiers, so something is wrong somewhere in the engine.

My 7850 2GB paired with a stock i5 750 and 8GB RAM copes pretty damn well with most games these days.

With metro ll, everything on max except I turned SSAA or whatever it is of (absolutely killed FPS), physx of and tesselation on low (game FPS were "acceptable" but I prefer smoother gameplay)

Crysis 3 everything on more or less max except motion blur was turned of (hate it), shadows and some 1 or 2 other settings (can't remember which) were set to medium or high.

Far cry 3 also ran very well (jitter every now and then though [not as bad as what other people had though] but this was due to ATI drivers iirc as even people with 7950 etc. complained about this, funny thing is, didn't have any of that jitter with my 4850 512MB :o :p) with everything set to max more or less, had post FX turned of as the graphics were actually better then and AA set to 2x iirc

And pretty much every other game that I have tried so far has no problems whatsoever.
