Hi guys

I am looking at moving over to PC after the recent next gen announcements flopped in my opinion. I would use the PC for all purposes with the general Microsoft packages for work but obviously want to gear it up for gaming also.

I have around £1000 to spend can be more or less within reason and i am ideally looking to get the i7 intel processor, not sure if this is possible with this budget.

I am a complete novice when it comes to custom builds so i am generally looking for some advice as a starting point after hours of looking on this site at parts with no idea what works well with each other haha.

I would like to future proof as much as possible so the machine would be able to run games in 3 years time for example.

Appreciate any advice anyone can provide.

Thanks a lot

Dean

Cheers for the response guys... i just thought an i7 processer would be better for future proofing the computer? as i said i am not really that clued up on it all currently. A monitor would be a bonus in the price but doesnt matter if extra and i would need a copy of windows 8

Cheers

Cheers buddy how much more do you think it would cost me to get like 8GB of RAM minimum? would more than 8GB be wise? i know you can get 16GB but would i ever need that even down the line in a few years.

My bad, I added the wrong RAM. If you are gaming any more than 8gb would be pointless. The current rig killers like Crysis 3, Farcry3 and BF4 will not depend too heavily on RAM, but more on the GPU. More RAM will be used of course, but not the entire 8gb.

cheers man i will have a look at some of these parts and try and learn some more about them, appreciate you making the build for me to look at gives me more of an idea of what i can get for the budget currently

once consoles have 8gb of ram with next gen then maybe yes.
But for now no, by 8gb on 2 dimms and drop another 8 in if and when you need it.

A case maybe nice unless you want to leave it all on your desk as well. Media drives (dvd/bluray)?

Haha yeah i was thinking of going for an open build so it doesn't overheat... i would like a blue ray drive but not 100% necessary.

Don't do that to yourself!

Also, from what I understand, Microsofts draconian intentions with their XBox One, make it a complete non-starter, but I have heard that the Sony PS4 will remain as open an unintrusive as the current gen Sony console. Are there reports circulating stating differently?

You can use the Windows 8 Enterprise (Evaluation) Edition for free on a 3 month trial. WIndows 8.1 will be a service pack of sorts and adds back the start menu.....it too should get an evaluation to try. So you can worry about an OS much later and concentrate cash on components instead :)

There is THIS Tahiti cored 7870XT GPU which is closely related to the 7950. It's much cheaper but can be OC'd to trade blows with a stock 7950, obviously the 7950 can be OC'd to close the gap on the 7970 but you need to balance out things yourself...it's there as an option.

Retail CPU has a longer warranty and a stock cooler (not needed), CPU failure is rare but gives you peace of mind for a few quid more. B grade 2TB HDD saves nearly £20 and I've put that 7870XT in to trim costs. Hope this helps :)

Cheers for the advice mate i am struggling to learn whats better than what in most components atm but i will get there, don't know whether to attempt to build my first PC myself or go for a customization route and let overclockers build it for me

The build part isn't difficult, balancing the parts to the budget is the tricky bit.

Maybe watching THIS will give you some confidence.

I have a sour view of it but plenty others claim that they 'really like it when [they] get used to it'.

Also, there are of course certain improvements with W8 that you dont get with W7, and some improvements that M$ could implement into W7, but won't, because they want everyone on W8.

Yeah thats fair enough, how long will it be before the next version of windows comes out roughly ?
