Hey guys,

My brother is looking at getting a new gaming PC, requirements are as follows:

Budget is £1200 total, if we can come in under this all the better - this is to include a 24inch monitor and an OS (no keyboard/mouse required)

Optical drive and 500Gb drive can be re-used from the existing machine.

System must include an SSD large enough for the OS and a few games.

Case is still undecided but we have been looking at the Corsair C70 / Shinobi / Akasa Venom Toxic / CM Storm Trooper so case budget is looking at anything between £70 to £130 at the moment so please factor this into the build.

I've not read up on the latest Nvidia offerings or Haswell, is it worth going for those or get the last gen for a bit cheaper?

We will also be putting a small OC onto the CPU so a half decent cooler will be required (air only)

Thanks for the help in advance.

Looks a great spec to me snips, I'm thinking to get it on budget he goes for a 120/128Gb SSD for now and he can add a second one when he can afford it and then transfer his Steam games over.

What % of the SSD should be left spare if we go for my method, should you be leaving about 10-15% free?

With the above rig, would you gain much by having the 1866 ram over the 1600?

Also, the house can get pretty dusty - does anyone recommend a good air cooling case with a really good stock filter system.

Samsung magician software will do it for you, it will set aside a portion of hard drive called over provisiong.

Sounds nice and easy, I'll have a look at that later.

You can use the Windows 8 Enterprise (evaluation) Edition for free on a 3 month trial. Windows 8.1 will be a service pack of sorts and will add back the start menu and it too should get a trial. You can then worry about buying the OS much later and concentrate your cash on components now. I'm still under budget incase you want to get an OS from the get go though ;)

1866 or greater RAM makes the system more responsive/efficent, that NZXT case has ok dust filters for easy cleaning.

Very good point re the evaluation download, I'll have to get my brother to join later today so he can chime in too on his thoughts but I'm sure he'd be over the moon with either system.

Still a bit of digging to do on the case yet though...

Cheers for the responses so far

Hi guys, I'm Supermellow's brother! Thanks for all the specs you've sent in, been so helpful. I didn't realise I could get such a high quality comp for the price :) . I should be ordering the setup next Friday, so ill post up which components I end up getting. I think I'm leaning more towards Hono's setup at the moment, but I've got a fickle mind!

It would be wise to get a re-spec done as the prices i.e the offers change. That mobo no longer comes with the free cooler sadly. I look forward to seeing what you settle on in the end

Yea that's probably a sensible idea, I'll have another look at what's available this Friday when I go to order.

I'm thinking of going for the white bitfenix shinobi case (ATX) as it looks awesome! :)

Would it be worth going for a mobo without a cooler and buying a cheapish one to fix next to it? Or would the difference in temperature be negligible?

Counting down the days!!

Just spoke to my Chrir and he will be ordering Friday for a Saturday delivery so if we could have a re-spec by then that would be much appreciated. :D

Cheers guys.

• The PSU is made by Seasonic.
• The motherboard doesnt come with a cooler anymore so thats why the H100 is included.
• Faster RAM
• Awesome cooler on the GFX card.

Thanks Stulid,

Great spec as usual!! We'll swap the 300R for a Shinobi which is about the same cost and more than likely go with air cooling as I'm not sold on the idea of a closed loop cooler (read too many bad comments about them on these forums when I was looking at them)

Any suggestions on an air cooler?

The H100 will be fine and clears the extremely tall RAM without any issue, the radiator will go into a Shinobi's roof area.

If you want an air cooler then these are nice,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Thermalright Archon SB-E X2 CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1150 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £59.99
1 x NH-U12S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU Cooler with NF-F12 Fan (Socket 1150 / 1155 / 1156 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £52.99
Total : £122.88 (includes shipping : £8.25).

The Noctua clears all RAM 100% of the time on Z87, the SB-E X2 should too.

Thanks for the re-spec stulid, really liking the look of that build :) Hopefully the prices will stay fairly similar towards the end of the week!

Thanks for the options - I'll leave Chrir do a bit of reading on the cooler and see what he thinks, I do agree they look better in the case though!! Gives a nice clean look.
