Road Cycling Essentials

Picked up my bike today, it's my first ever rode bike, never rode one before at all.

Thought I'd have a quick blast up and down my street, it's awesome, much smoother than I expected, so good going up hill too! Trouble is I haven't really done any exercise at all so I'm cream crackered already. Looking forward to trying again though, either later today or tomorrow. I need to take it easy though, too much temptation to go fast.

I would take a couple more tubes. They are not that expensive and they wont go to waste (assuming you're not going to chuck your bike in a bin when you finish :p). It wouldnt be that unusual to get 2 punctures over that sort of distance. Especially if you only have a small hand pump with you and cant get a proper pressure in, then you're much more likely to get some pinch punctures as well.

Noted. It's a fully supported ride so they will provide me with spares if needed but I'll take 2 with me and then replace as necessary at the stops.
Because of my arm issues i've got a CO2 pump as well if i struggle - hopefully that won't let me down.

I'll be borrowing arm warmers and hopefully a waterproof - I really don't want to spend a lot on one as it will be the only time i use if i have to.

24k in a week? Not. A. Chance. I couldn't do that in a month.

I can't wait until I'm 70 and retired and can cycle all day.

Find a steep hill and do hill repeats. This challenge is not time consuming it's probably one of the easier ones to fit in.

24,000 ft on a 10% gradient is 45 miles. A quick calculation assuming 6 mph is about 8 hours. Allowing for decents you are probably looking at 10-12 hours.

I think you need a dose of MTFU. ;)

After my L2B ride this morning I now know how it feels to be a sail boat!

25mph crosswinds at the top of Ditchling Beacon scared the **** out of me.

The only thing worse than a savage cross wind is a wet manhole cover on a bend combined with a savage cross wind. Oh, and having bladed spokes probably didn't help matters.

On the plus side, I got home before it started to rain :D

I like the look of your route. Wouldn't mind giving it a try some time.

worst thing about the roads.. potholes ok.. but if its raining and you ride over one DONT Brake don't turn and hope for the best.. the number of times i lost my front at speed is crazy.. can't stand them

My boss put it together. He often rides out that way, so I went along with him this morning to see what it's like. I really liked the route; it was on country lanes for the vast majority of the time and had some pretty decent climbs in it. Starting at 05:30 probably helped with avoiding the traffic - it wasn't until I got to West Wickham did I get stuck at any lights. It also avoided going down Chalkpit Lane, which is good as I hate going down there. Where would you start from? I'm assuming you don't live in Warlingham!

You certainly make it sound easy, however I'm still giving this challenge a miss. :D

Hows everyone doing on the Fizik challenge? I've only been out twice since it started. Away all next week. Doubtful I'll finish at this rate :(
