"‘Get the bacon sarnies out’ remark cost Heywood IT contractor dream job "

BRB bacon sandwich time.

LOL

"Mr Hunt added: “When the manager called me, I was driving and I got increasingly exasperated as he kept telling me I should admit to my wrongdoing for referring to bacon sandwiches. In the end I told him to ‘sod off’ and put the phone down. They have blown this out of all proportion.”"

There you have it, for a £50,000 salary all he had to say was "My intention was not to offend but I apologise". Instead he got frustrated and told someone to sod off. Seems fair even if the underlying issue is ridiculous.

As it is telling a recruiter to "sod off" when they're already reconsidering employing you is not a good way to handle the situation. I'd also query whether going to the papers was a good plan, it's unlikely to make him an attractive prospect to most other future employers (certain possible exceptions aside) for his apparent disregard for sensitivities of other cultures and his rudeness in dealing with others in the organisation.

Sensitivities to other cultures that are guests in our house? His rudeness dealing with a dumbass PC organisation that would much rather keep Muslims happy than British people in work? WHAT!?

Allowable meal update.

I have now eaten the aforementioned bacon for my tea and have so far neither been sacked, arrested nor have I gone to the snoozepapers with my story.

He didn't have to say a thing and anybody with a lick of sense wouldn't bow down to partake in such pathetic pandering just to appease some spiteful, alcohol swigging bitch who pretends to be a Muslim. Nobody should have even contemplated calling him about the underlying issue purely on the basis of it being stupidly ridiculous. If that bird came up to me (as my employee) and told me about it, i would have explained to her that it's nothing and told her to get back to work.

OcUK posters showing their closet racist tendencies as usual. :o (not referring to the above post FWIW, although as far as I know it's OK for a Muslim to be pictured with alcohol in the background from which you've surmised she is an "alcohol swigging bitch")

Usually, people who have to qualify their existence first and foremost with the words 'I'm not a racist.....' are the kind of bigoted idiots seen here.

A sensible person would have apologised on the telephone to the manager, turned the car around and gone back to the agency to resolve it face to face.

Our man here decided to become a foamer which cost him his contract. I'm sure the person who did eventually get the contract was the kind who thinks before opening their mouth.

All she had to say was "nice of you to offer, but unfortunately I don't eat bacon!"

What the actual **** ? Bacon sarnies are part of life here and have been for a long, long time. :p

I actually avoid bacon/pork if I have a choice myself, but it's not for religious reasons.

People can be funny. Im guessing he did say he did not mean to cause offense, and did not realise she was a muslim. However he probably wanted him to grovel, and a formal apology. I probably would not do that either, because the intention was friendly.

I do love the fact the DM felt the need to put up a bacon roll picture in case their retarded readership can't force their brain cell to picture it themselves. The fact its not actually a sarnie shows how thick their "journalists " are as well.

Guess the job wasn't nearly as important as he's making out then

An awful lot of failure in this sorry situation.

She shouldn't have complained about an off the cuff remark that seems to have no racist intent.
Her manager should have told her to stop being silly.
The guy should have been more professional over the phone.

None of them come out of it looking overly professional.

Does sound like a ridiculous complaint... and again we've got religion being confused with race.

I suspect that he might have handled the second phone call a bit badly though - while recruitment consultants are often retarded I don't think they're so retarded that they'd decide against placing a candidate based on a sandwich comment alone - his angry reaction to being challenged over it is more likely the red flag for them...

I point-blank refuse to give the DM any advertising revenue so I never click on their links but I can imagine that the need to picture bacon between some sort of bread product wasn't made at such a high editorial level. I'm glad that the foamers that read the DM can now visualise a bacon roll without having to over stretch their limited cerebral capacity.
