Do Faster Momory Speeds Really Make A Difference

Something ive never really bothered about is memory speeds i use the the 1600 mhz and there are speeds up to 2400 mhz now...is it really worth spending on faster memory...or shall i stick with what i have...what advantage would i have thanks...
 
Spending money on faster memory doesn't give a great performance return for most systems. Going from 1600MHz to 2400MHz or quicker won't give you more than a handful of % improvement in overall system performance.

The only exception to this I can think off are AMD APUs which love faster RAM for the iGPU performance.

Faster memory is quite expensive, for the same sort of money you could sell your 3820 and upgrade to a 3930k or even 4930k when they become available. This will give a much bigger performance boost.
 
Haswell as far as im aware can in general run faster memory but like sandybridge and ivybridge it doesn't give you any improvement you will notice outside of benchmarking.

on x79 it may well help with encoding and such but not much. 1600mhz or 1866 is a good speed i think

It's ok. At first glance I thought you were talking about faster mammary speeds ! :D
 
I think the trick with memory is getting the cheap low speed memory that overclocks well *cough* Samsung Green. At least you get good value for money that way.
 
Haven't got around to testing it with the latest high end CPUs but will all previous generations of intel CPUs to get anything like meaningful differences in gaming performance just from RAM alone you need to go from pretty much the lowest spec generic sticks to the highest spec premium stuff. There are some specific areas of desktop useage* where you will see a bit of a difference but in terms of general desktop useage you won't ever notice a difference from RAM speed alone.


* i.e. some compile tools for video game development can be quite heavy on RAM bandwidth and higher spec memory can shave minutes off a batch i.e. something that would take 40 minutes could be shaved down to 35 minutes.
