Hassan Rouhani described as a moderate conservative has won the election in Iran.

He has stated that he wants to re engage with the west, protect the freedom of the press in Iran and free political prisoners.

After years of tensions could this user in a new era?

New era?

Nothing stays new for very long in the middle-east.

On paper this election result is rather good news however there's still a huge instability around the whole of the middle east that negates any real hope for some kind of peace.

It's a positive drop of water in an ocean of toxicity.

So long as Khamenei is in charge, nothing will change.

You couldn't be more wrong. Whilst he is in charge everything will always change - for example this result. If there is one thing he is good at it is balancing the relative power of the factions.

Its a good step at least... The country has a large population of young people and they certainly don't all share the views of the current religious leaders as the student protests demonstrated a few years ago.

If the nuclear situation can be resolved peacefully then we'd likely see some serious change within a generation.

He is a moderate conservative only in comparison to the rest.....he is no radical reformer. Business as usual is my guess.

Maybe, but I doubt it. "moderate conservative" in Iran isn't very moderate and new leaders everywhere often make some statements of general intent that don't commit them to anything but which they think will be popular.

But it might be a start of a beginning of something that might in time perhaps form the foundation of a new era, maybe.

My understanding is the elected guy is just a puppet for the 'Khomeini.

He has the power in Iran.

Tis good news tho.

As said previously, it's a hotbed in the Middle East without a clear answer to the problem.

It seems the new Iranian president spent a lot of his younger years in Glasgow. A place where educational standards and life expectancy are supposedly lower than in Iran. Bit of pub chat for you there.
