Back to AMD but might be going back?

LOL Typical for me to cut THAT many corners.

Anyway, a mate today brought a PC he did swaps for, and he had a Gigbyte 990XA-UD3 Motherboard.

Now, we had no end of troubles with that thing, but he had a HEX3.2 in it and the issues were down to iffy HDs, however, all 3 HDs ( 2x160 + 2x320 ) all maxtor all gave us the exact same problems... One was ok, but 2 or more and its would hang.

When he went home for a bit, I threw in a pair of 1TB drives and it ran a treat.

So, if I did the dirty, would that be a nice board to grab off him?

Oh and I forgot to mention...

I upgraded to Win8 from Win7 last night... I have no idea why, but I have.

Couple of apps no longer work... O&O Defrag for one that annoys me cos I got up to v15 but I need to pay for v16 ( Not happening - I will wait for a few more versions first )

But I will admit that I am not so hateful of it right now ( Early days )

speed is no longer an issue, or at least not a much as it first was. It boots fairly sluggishly, but once its up and running it is fine.

Windows 8 shouldn't be booting up sluggishly, it took only a few seconds to boot up on my old Dell L502X and that was with a mechanical drive.

Its perfeftly fine on my old Laptop too.

As I said previously its only on this PC that its being a bugger, and, if you read the posts, its not just windows 8 but also Windows 7 gave me headaches, but Linux did not.

As of tonight, I have decided to go back to Windows 7.

My SoundCard ( XFI Fartalitity ) works great through the headphones in the Live Drive thingy, but everytime I unplug, I have to keep flicking it over to Entertainment mode to play from the speakers, and its glitchy and seriously problematic for me. Thats not to say Win7 wasnt without its own issues, but at least they were workable.

I may have either done the best or worst deal for a long time.

My mate, who has been having issues with his PC ( has a 990 Mobo ) and I have offered him a swap for my new 970.

Well he has just offered me a straight swap... His 3.2Ghz HEX Core setup, for a working PC that I dont use.

So, I said to grab the one in the far right corner of the LAN room. I no longer able to go up as I am currently wheelchair bound, but I told him to have a play and make sure he is happy with it before bringing it downstairs.

20 or so minutes later, he brought it down and could not believe how fast it was... Of course, it was fast, but me being a complete plonker, and unable to remember what stuff is where, I have given him my Lian Li PC. DQ6 Mobo Intel 9550 2x60GB SSD in Raid plus 2x750 again Raid, 8GB Ram and a 9800GT graphics... Sodding buggery.

I am now thinking 2 things...

1 That was a great setup, ran like a rocket and I forgot I was experimenting with SSD Raid on that setup

2 Well, I get a better Mobo that will hopefully cure my whinging about this octo core AMD, but also my HEX core now gets upgraded to 3.2 from 2.6, but also plus, I now have another HEX core that I can flog off or give to my mate down the road.

So, perhaps swings and roundabouts eh?

Ok, well its now up and running in the 990

I took the opportunity to slap in a copper cooler instead of the Asus Aluminum one. Temps dropped nicely and its floating at 36c right now.

I decided to convert a bunch of AVI flicks to DVD... 4 AVI Files

The AVI Files are on E: and the TEMP DVD Folder is on D: ( Both are Samsung 1TB Drives ) and I used ConvertXtoDVD, setting the affinity to use only 2 cores each, and this would in fact use up all 8 cores then I am sure.

What a load of cack.

This board is no better than the 970... not really.

It almost hung... It was completely unresponsive after pressing start on all 4 of them and I was utterly unable to do a thing until the first one finally finished and even then its as glitchy as hell.

Now, ok, this MUST be me surely, I must be missing something for sure, but what?

I tried again, this time settign all 4 videos again to only one core each, but again, the PC ran like it was in glue.

One Video given all 8 or even 2 on 4 seems to be fine, but no more.

The I7 with the exact same hardware was fully able to run 4 on 2 each, plus it was folding on all 8 cores ( ok 4 but you know what I mean 8 logical )

What I am going to do, is give it one last shot, a fresh install ( Again, of Windows 7 - not this 8 thingy as I just dont like it ) and if it dont play well by monday, Im going back to Intel.

Oh, and this frigging 990 has an issue with the RAM. Like the I7, I can only use 2 sticks and that 970 let me play with all 4

I know 16GB is more than I can ever use, but sod it... I got 32 FFS, I want to like a spoilt git I am.

Enough is enough!

Trying to use 7zip to compress a load of icons, pictures etc to put onto an External to chuck into a Laptop has just taken 1hour and 13 minutes, and its only 14% through it!

This very same bunch of file I compressed with the I7 and it was something like 5 to 10 minutes.

I am NOT going to waste anymore time. Im putting my I7 back in. Enough is enough!

Ok, back to my Intel.

Im glad too!

I spent all morning buggering about with my AMD6 and AMD 8 plus the I7

I also grabbed a whole load of backup files to put into the laptop, and what I did, was ZIP them up but the AMD8 took almost 25 minutes.
I just did the very same files on the I7 and it took 4

There simply MUST be something wrong there?

Anyway, the AMD is back with Linux and guess what... Its lightning quick again.

End of thread I recon... Rant over

Hello again, did you try bumping up the voltage at all? if you bumped the voltage up by 2 bumps it may run a little better. Most 8350's are only just stable, as they have to have low voltage to keep them 125w, as simple bump can help!

No, I have to admit.

I have gone back to the intel and I am staying there for now.

I will definitely up it a notch though and give it a play.

Update. Its been a while

I have just bought new bits.

AMD - Gone Sabretooth and a new 8350 CPU
Intel - Gone XEON for a kick cos I want dual CPU. Utterly ridiculous I know but I dont care. Solitaire here I come.

AMD is definitely giving me issues... Even the new one seems to hang its windows a lot while I never have any such issues with intel.

So, this AMD fan is now turned to the dark side, I feel for good.

It's obviously because of your hardware configuration or your software setup. Many people, including myself, are very happy with the 8350 and do not have any of the problems you have.

I am not sure what to recommend to help you sadly but looking at your posts I do get the impression that you have a dig into AMD like it's there fault your computer keeps hanging. The chance of getting a faulty CPU is very low and since you replaced your old one with a new model it's likely not to be that.

If it works fine under Linux then it is most likely a software issue in Windows. Do you install all of the drivers correctly (from the website and not the disc)? Do you then install the recommended hotfixes for Windows 7? Are you sure all of the BIOs are set up correctly? Are you sure the copy of Windows you install do not have problems? Is it a really old copy? Is it fine before installing other software?

Oh dont get me wrong here.

I absolutely love AMD. I would happily use an AMD thats slighty slower than an Intel just because its AMD not Intel.

The thing is, that I have been doing "X" on the Intels and the AMDs simply cannot cope with doing the same.

Running just one job and its cool, its fantastic and I am absolutely happy with it, but its simply too funky when I try to get it to do a number of things.

What I do find absolutely impressive with the Asus Sabretooth setup is that installing Windows is disgustingly quick.

Last night I did another install and I doubt that it was any more than 15 minutes until I was on the desktop starting to install the Drivers etc? - Similarly, yesterday, or was it the day before, I upgraded the Windows 7 to Windows 8 and that also was only about 10 or 15 minutes? - it was certainly within one episode of Mock the week anyway... Thats bloody quick.

As for it workign fine under Linux, this is also an unknown really because, as I said, in windows under normal use, its a monster, and I never really pushed it like I do under windows as I dont have the same apps for them do I, so, I never actually noticed anything to make it do what it does.

But yeah... Bottom line is simple... Im just whining.

It could be driver conflicts. Was it a fresh install of windows or did you just replace the i7 cpu and mobo with the AMD ones? you did the latter it will still have all the old drivers (unless you prepared the pc correctly for the transition).

Its a fresh install... The 4th one in as many days.

To be fair, the first time I did simply swap the bits around ( due to a combination of exitement and impatience ) but yeah, I prepped it first.
The second was a true install but that gave me completely different issues, I then upgraded to Win8 ( while in Win 7 and through a mounted ISO in Virtual CloneCD ) and then since I was utterly unable to now access Emails, and I remembered the issues with the SoundCard, I moved back to Win7, but then later on that day... Another install of Win7, but this time, rather then using the Media refresh ISO on a USB Flash drive, I used the original DVD ( does not have SP1 intergrated )

I still get issues, but I am trying to ignore them.

Bit difficult when your PC kind of randomly hangs on certain things and blasts along with others.

Current drivers are all completely fresh and downloaded only a couple of days ago, plus I have upped the BIOS from 15xx to 17xx too, btu has it helped? I dont know. Its certainly a placebo .

Oh, and I have also changed from Avast to NOD32 - Avast has been flawless for me for years, but recently has been a PITA esp. with Thunderbird so its gone.

It does not sound like the CPU's fault. Windows Updates would only be a tad slower if they were affected at all. I'd say it's most likely a configuration issue, that the BIOS needs tampering with. (Although it should work fine out of the box shouldn't it?)

Either that or the motherboard is faulty, or chipset drivers etc. need installing.

Wow, no offence but you seem to do things completely at random and not based on any real common sense of logic. :D

Also, reading your posting style is headache-inducing. :(

I am actually doing tests and adjustments in very sensible and logical order.

But yes, I agree, my mind is absolutely scrambled and my posts certainly dont help at all do they?

Please forgive this however, as I do have a valid reason.

I try to get everything out while my head works, and I end up typing garbage.

I already suffer with brain farts and right now, I am on some seriously great painkillers that dont help matters. ( Thisis not a joke- its actually true )

So sorry, but please bear with me... I know my posts are headache inducing, you think its bad for you? I have to write the stuff! LOL

Can't say you're wrong there yet I've been reading this thread in the background for no other reason than enjoying FatRakoon's posting style/wording which I'm almost riveted to....Unique is the only word I can describe & the posts make me smile :) ;)
