Hello,

I am looking to purchase a new graphics card over the next few days and need a little help choosing.

My current specs are i52500k @ 4.5ghz, 8GB DDR3 1600 and an ASRock Z68 Pro3 Intel Z68. I previously had a 6950 but sold it a while back as I didnt use my PC for a long time.

All of my gaming will be done at 1080p. I will be looking to play mostly First Person Shooters, Driving games and things like Dead Island, Borderlands etc. Nothing to GPU intensive. I am not an avid gamer so it will just be occasional use.

I was planning on getting the VTX3D 7870 Black Boost. However this seems to not be for sale on here anymore. I also read a few reviews about it being very noisy and that it runs a tad hot!

I don't really want to spend more than £190 as I don't think I can justify spending more. So not looking to get a 7950!

So, what do you recommend? :)

Thanks

I would guess a 7870 would be a good choice. But you can get 7950's for £200 if you wait for a deal. I'd recommend waiting for a 7950 as its worth it. Either that or pick up a second hand card like I did with my 680.

Do the deals come around fairly often?

Do the 79** cards still come with the AMD reloaded game pack? If so you can buy a £220 card and get £30-£40 worth of games free..

You do the math. :)

I believe they do. Will there be any advantage of getting one over a 7870 for my needs? Slighlty more future proof maybe?

Thanks. There seems to be a lot of bad feedback about the MSI 7950's. How often do daily deals appear for the 7950's?

That's for the twin frozr msi 7950. It had a problem with the fan getting stuck at 100%, it does not affect the msi card i listed though.

If you don't mind spending a bit extra then you could get a HIS 7950. Comes with a nice quiet cooling solution. Had five of these cards and the worst overclocker still did 1100 on the core. ;)

I like the look of the HIS one. I think Ill wait and see if it comes on offer anytime soon

It can be found somewhere in the world for £230 so if you ask in ocuk customer services they will price match for you, they did for me. :)

I think that, as evidenced by the pricing on the 6xx series post 770/780, prices don't come down much when new series arrive. Obviously, it might be different with the AMD cards, but I'd not hold your breath.

Personally, I'd go with keeping an eye on the clearance section for stuff that falls into the upper end of your budget (specifically a 7950).

Yea but the thing is for the B-Grade 7950, they are never lower than £170- £199.99. People would be better off getting a new card and sell of the games for the longer warranty. Particularly if a HIS/Sapphire B-Grade 7950 fails after 3 months, it would mean the 7950 need to be RMA to somewhere in Asia, so it is pretty hopeless.

True dat. Still think that £170 is a good price, if he can find one for that, even with all of that taken into account. The likelihood is that any problems show up in the first couple of weeks, which are covered on B grade stuff, and if he's that worried he can always go with a brand with a UK RMA address.

Bumping this thread again.

Just noticed the OCUK Mega Bundle. The HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST comes in at £239.99 with 8 free games.

So tempted now!
