Do your work colleagues understand your geekiness

Exactly.
Out of 4 guys i was the only one not heavily into comic books and World of Warcraft, sounds nice if you are a gamer but it gets really boring fast. They used to play together too so it was a pretty closed circle of geekyness
Oh god they used to LARP too ....and play D&D it was as cliche geeky as you could get.
it made me with my call of duty and everquest 2 "hobbies" feel pretty normal
LARP'ing is fairly geeky but I don't think comic books and role playing is that geeky. Anymore I dislike MMO players that just talk about their MMO all the time. To me MMOs especially World of Warcraft are the most pointless things ever.
At least LARP'ers get exercise that involves moving more than their mouse hand!

Since i work in IT then yes.. to a degree.
Most of my family, friends and colleagues have benefited from various repairs and upgrades in the past and to date.
I don't tend to mention the meets, lans or the games I've been on and played. That I keep to myself.

There is always that moment when you meet someone new and have a feeling they might be as nerdy as you... so you probe a bit and find out what you're dealing with
This exact thing happened with a good friend of mine at my last place of work. We had conversed and got on well for about a month after meeting and never really expressed our geeky sides until one day... he let a Star Wars reference slip. I don't even remember the exact reference.
The rest is history.
Edit; not to say that Star Wars is or is not geeky, but using references in day to day conversation is. And I love it.

When people ask, so what are you going to be doing on your day off and I reply, gran turismo.. they look with mild disdain. When I expand upon that and say don't worry I've got a steering wheel set up and my new driving gloves are ready I already know what they are thinking. Despite there being new seasonal races to run.
If I said I was just going to melt my brain watching afternoon TV they would be more accepting as they can relate to that.

This is the same as me, I work for an IT company and there is only one or two out of many (100s) that actually like computers out side of work. Some of the actually hate computers to some extent. They use them for utility kind of like my mom does. But they don't care about E3 (probably don't even know what it is) or other conferences or latest news on tech, they don't even follow security news. Its pathetic. They didn't even know what TED was.
There is one or two that i can talk to about computer related things. But when i started talking about SSD they thought i was from another planet.
A lot of them or at least, some of them, definitely look down on me because i don't go out every night and get drunk in a pub/club. Some of them even look down on me because i don't go to the gym or follow popular culture.
I don't talk about it at work because I don't care enough about what others do outside of work; I care a whole lot less when people want to talk about computers because I spend all day long working in IT. Why would I care if you've overclocked your toaster? It really isn't that interesting...
There are certain clients who try to instigate conversations about the latest tech whilst I'm working, and I do my very very best to ignore them because I simply don't want to talk to them about it, not because I don't have an interest in things.
Call me a miserable bugger, IT pays for my life... but it doesn't run it.
I keep it locked away and never to be brought up when people ask what I do I usually reply with sleep or go out on my bike though there are a select few that know mainly because I've helped them out with issues and so on....
There was one incident when a friend needed help with his laptop and he came back to mine to see my 2 24" monitors and my huge desk nice and neat he sort of blabbed but managed to keep that under wraps
I struggle to keep quiet when someone in work around me chats utter tosh about stuff to do with computers and so on but I bite my lip hah weirdly I don't play games and such anymore seems like a bit of a waste thinking about it now....

Exactly. Outside of work a computer is a tool to get something done. Often something I enjoy doing (for example, video production)
I've had people talk about overlooking or the latest Intel chipset at work and I just zone it out. It's dull.
Now I'm a bit of a board game geek and will wax lyrical about them. I don't do this at work because I bet the same people who drone on about front side buses would zone me out.
That's the problem with the word geek. There are many different niches.
Why should browsing the internet and forums be classed as geeky, when almost everyone else seems to be glued to facebook. Is Facebook not geeky?
I'd much rather spend my time on here and other forums than FB and don't mind anyone knowing that.

Slight derailing perhaps, but why does liking something now constitute being a 'geek' anyway? It seems to be one of the most commonly misused terms in existance lately, unless it's just my imagination?
