120Hz or 2560 X 1440 gaming

Well thanks to all that has helped me :) lots of reading and YouTubing and I will be purchasing the (Asus VG278HE 27" TRUE 144Hz )
After messing around with Vsync on BF3 I feel its more important to have smoother gameplay than absolute picture fidelity, there will always be trade-offs and I think I lean more towards smoothness :D I think:confused: lol

I will let you guys know what I think of it when I get it.

Good choice for a fellow BF3 fan IMO. Hope you enjoy it. :)

While we are at it i've never seen the need for v sync with 120Hz screens. Its all so much faster issues with tearing etc seem to disappear. Vsync introduces lag so is best left off if you have no visual issues.

That good to know ;) thanks, I will cap the FPS first at 80 then 100 just to see the affect in BF3.
I'm excited now and got Overclockers to do a next day delivery.

Meh. Lag is way over exaggerated on ips/pls. I don't notice any difference between the sammy 950 and my old ilyama tn panel. Except the huge huge quality and definition ;)

hay guys i now have my new ASUS VG278HE monitor desktop is not to bad brighter than i thought it would be though colour does look off and the text does look a bit blockier.

Could I have your expert help, Setting desktop refresh rate to 120Hz and moving screens around was WOW that's smooth you can pretty much read the text as your moving the pages around ;) I like.

So now going into BF3 with this caped at 120FPS the game does look smoother but I do still get tearing very noticeable around the cargo crates, I then put on Vsync and this was unbelievable, really smooth and crisp truly nice to look at But is this right should i have to keep Vsync on?? there was no mouse lag at all where when i had this on with 60Hz i would feel a lot of input lag which i hate so this is a very positive thing for me.

So if someone could give me a little lesson on this :) thanks

Set vsync on but make sure your pc detects the monitor as a 120hz. Leaving Vsync off will just churn out more frames that you wont see and cause tearing.

This is strange as i got a lot of tearing in BF3, I caped the game at 120fps and monitor refresh set to 120Hz but the amount tearing did surprise me so i turned on Vsync and it looked amazing yet no lag what so ever and i am very perceptible that.

I spent a lot of last night tweaking the monitor and AMD Catalyst to get what i think is acceptable one of the settings (Sharpness) made a good change default was 50 i put this down to 40 so slightly softer which ironically made text look better ;)

As the night went on some maps on BF3 was not holding 120fps so i caped BF3 to 100fps and the screen refresh rate to 100Hz with Vsync on and this still looked really smooth, Is this ok to do? or should i keep the refresh rate to say 120Hz? and cap the fps to 100

I get no tearing at all on the same monitor you have. I have it set at 144hz, but I use Nvidia control panel. I wonder if this is a AMD Catalyst or driver issue?

Ok well I put the PC on this morning set monitor to 144Hz set BF3 to 200fps i.e maximum no limit and went back on the map with all those cargo crates and seems that there is no tearing? LOL is it me???

So what is the preferred use for 120/144Hz gaming? Vsync on our off? I did not get any lag with on which was nice but on big maps 64 players I could not hold 120 fps hence why I put it down to 100fps and 100Hz

You dont need to cap BF3 below 120FPS.
If you were getting 100FPS and left the refresh rate at 120hz, it would be the same. You should only be concerned when your FPS is higher than 120FPS. By concerned, im pointing out the most minute issue.
Leave your refresh rate at 120hz and have you game capped at 120fps. Any FPS below that will be fine, including fluctuations due to different maps

I play arma and flight Sims and when i am in a dogfight and doing a lot of pilot head movement I will take 120Hz over 1440p any day

my bet is you have never seen 1440p.

if you are trying to say you need more than 60 smooth fps to turn your head and look around then.. well lets say we disagree. and for flight sims the higher the res, the more detailed everything looks. which is nice

i cant lie. its not as smooth. if it was then there would be no comparison.

but personally i have used both and prefer the higher detail levels. if you get a good 1440p display you get smooth motion low lag. AND the main thing that people forget, the 120/144 hz displays are all TN style crappy picture quality. so besides the extra resolution you have better colours and a nicer pc experience in general, not just in games. also if you play flight sims, you should be able to make out things from further away with the increased pixel density ;)
