I don't think gaming would benefit much from the i7 over the i5. I think you'd be getting off getting the i5 and spending more on SSD.

I would also be using the machine for work during the day, requiring running 4-8 virtual machines at a time in some instances.

The reason I went for the 7950 is that I already have a DCU2 7950 that I'm not sure works (didnt work with my old mobo, but worked in-store when tested). So if it does work, then I would put both in Crossfire, if not then I would keep the one from OCUK and RMA the one I have here.

I also have a 16GB kit of RipjawZ here for the rig, too.

That SSD is a bit of a no no being SataII and having the Sandforce Controller.

Not sure of your budget but how about.......

That Asus GPU is a triple slot cooler so having two will cover all but the top PCI-Ex (X1) slot

That does look better. I'm aware of the tripple slot GPU, but seeing as I have one here, I would want matching GPU's if I were going to crossfire.

Am I crazy to think rather than blowing crazy money on the i7 4770K and a £100 CPU cooler, it might be a better idea to go 2nd hand i5 2500K with a less expensive cooler, plus SLI/CF capable board and get a pair of 7950/GTX670 and get much better gaming performance? :p

i7-4770K and Corsair H100i: £365 minus Grid 2 game value £20= £345
vs
2nd hand i5 2500K £115 and capable air CPU cooler £30-£40= £145~£155

Price difference: £200

Gigabyte Z87X-D3H Intel Z87: £132
vs
2nd hand SLI/Crossfire capable board: £80

Price difference: £52

Total price difference: £252

That's extra money to get a 2nd 7950/GTX670 right there :D

Yes I agree the i7 4770K is faster than the i5 2500K, but is it "a whole £250/7950/GTX670 faster"? :p

Suprisingly you actually made some sense (oh yes he did!). :)

Though replace the word 2500k with 3570k, it may cost a bit more £15-£25 but it's worth it.

I think you may of over-estimated some prices too.. I saw a Z77X-D3H go for £60 the other week. :)

What i'd aim for is:

3570k
Z77X D3H
d14/K2/Silver Arrow/H80
GTX 670 SLI/GTX 760(ti)SLI?/7950/7970 Xfire

The reason for the 3570 rather than the 2500k is that ivybridge was a bigger improvment in term of performance over Sandy than Haswell was over Ivy. :)

Capiche? ;)

I've already got a 7950, so the one I would be buying is the second one. I expect this machine to last at least 5 or so years, which is why I was looking at latest-gen, and I need the hyper-threading for work applications.
