Do you really need 16GB of RAM,

If your only gaming 8GB will be fine (even for the next 3 years).

What Case/PSU do you have?

£180 is a lot for a 7850, you can get 7870 for that sort of money (even at OCUK).

I would recommend this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4430 3.00GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail with FREE Grid 2 PC Game £149.99
1 x MSI HD 7850 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards £149.99
1 x MSI Z87-G43 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard - FREE Alpenfohn Civetta Cooler!! £95.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (TXD38G2400HC10QDC01) £59.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £47.99
1 x OcUK 20x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £11.99
Total : £515.93 (includes shipping : FREE).

Do you really need 16GB RAM? 8 will be ideal if gaming.
Intel is quicker than AMD, better investment, lower heat & power consumption.
G/Card is quicker and you get a bigger HDD.
Free cooler with Motherboard is a bonus also.

What you think?

Spot on, Much Much better.. :)

YOu can even sell GRID 2 for £10-£15.. :)

Make sure your PSU is up to the job! Would be your worst nightmare if it's a cheap-o PSU and blows taking all your parts with it.

I'd rather take the Gigabyte Windforce 7850 over the MSI at the same price. A 7870 is £10ish more.

Can do a fairly decent Ivy i5K (overclockable) build for just over £500....

as he is not going to overclock he won't benifit from a K CPU.. So getting that over the haswell becomes moot.

Totally agree with you on the 7850 WF though. :)

Where does it say he won't ever overclock? and why is Snips "Spot on" for using an overclocking mobo for a non K CPU?

Apologies I confused my threads...

Hoped no one would notice..

You'd have to include a good cooler so he could overclock anyway, which would push it over budget...

I assume the reasoning behind snips motherboard choice is the fact a non OC motherboard plus a cooler would have cost near that price anyway.. Free cooler is a good bonus.

also, isn't the lx2 voltage locked?

Haswell is a little faster and has some good power savings but Ivy still isn't to be sniffed at. He can still up the clocks on the stock cooler a little (4Ghz maybe), it can always be upgraded later. Heatsinks don't have to be dear, would make a great gift from someone ;)

Ok the LX2 is a basic Z77 mobo but OCuk use it in pre-overclocked bundles @4.5Ghz with an aftermarket cooler. There is a product review on the item page that states the guy upped the voltage for overclocking so that answers your question.

Fair points, Seems a very valid option..

Just seems a bit odd picking old tech over new tech, though like you say the performance (when overclocked) will be worth it. :)

That's all it is bud an option lol I did my best to balance it to the budget but I was still over the £500. Even if I had cash spare to go towards a heatsink I can't really suggest one without knowing the case first ;)

I look forward to seeing what he settles on in the end :)

thanks for the reply's I have a 600w Corsair so psu is sorted still using my lan li pc60 case that I have had for about 10 years lol :) that's why I need a silver fronted dvd drive
