Hi guys. I'm thinking of upgrading my cpu to a quad or 6core cpu.
I mainly use my pc for watching movies but also like to play games.

At the moment it plays 1080p with no hicups and will play every game I have thrown at it at 720/1080 high settings.

Which chip is best for my needs amd phenom ii quad 955 or 965 or...
And fx 6100/200/300 ?

Thanks

Have you tried unlocking your X2 to an X3/X4? This option can be found in the Advanced BIOS features labelled as "CPU Unlock". If you can unlock it as three or four cores, then overclock it, it should perform similiar to the 6300 when gaming.

Once you've done that then a GPU upgrade will be more beneficial.

I have tried unlocking it. There's a thread on hear somewhere with lots of people helping me do it but the other cores are both defective.

I want to upgrade because I feel somtimes the cpu is bottle necking and dont want to stress it to much.

Check carefully your motherboard revision and type, there are several 78LMT variants, doublecheck the CPU compatibility.

If it works, the hex core piledriver is the best for you IMO.

Hi allready checked that. My board does support upto 8 cores. I just need to update my bios.

Another issue is cooling, i don't have enough room in my case for water cooling so would need a top grade low profile cooler.

Thanks

Which case is it? And I would say the 6300 would be the best cheapest move then.

It's not a known make, I got it of a well known auction site for cheap. It's the size of a desktop case that used to be at schools lol and fits atx mobos aswell so it's not mega tiny. But iv got ram cooler and stock cooler then gpu so space is abit tight.

Fx6300's are going for about 50-60 and I can sell mine for 30-35 so upgrade will only cost Me 20-30 at the max.

Also. Are all fx chips black edition ?
If not would black edition be better ?
Thanks

Go for a fx 6300 if you cant upgrade the motherboard. Though it says it is 8 core compatible, its VRMs will give up on the 6 core bulldozers and the 8 core pile drivers and bulldozers. I dont know how far you will be able to clock that cpu without the motherboard throttling it but a giant air cooler on your CPU will help a little bit.

Ok I'll keep that in mind, even though I won't be overclocking it lol

Thanks anyway :D
