GTX 770 vs 7950 (7970)?

Short question: is the 770 about £60/70 better than a 7950?

Res - 1920x1200, games: StarCraft II mostly (which isn't particularly demanding).

I do run 2 monitors though at 1920x1200.

The 7970 is in the mix as well if that's better (roughly same price as the 770)?

I'm quite happy to pay more but not for the sake of it as I'm not a huge resolution Battlefield player or anything like that.

Not in my opinion however Starfraft II does run better on Nvidia hardware so if thats your main game id go with a 770. :)

Cheers. The 770 is looking good.

The one lingering concern I have is that the (cheaper) 770 is 2GB and not 3/4GB. Will this be a problem at my resolution? I imagine not.

For Starcraft II, there's little meaning comparing between the 770 and 7950/7970, unless you are using 120Hz monitor instead of 60Hz- which the Nvidia card would be a better choice.

During the intensive scenes in SCII with crap loads of units duking it out, the limitation would be with the CPU, and it would struggle to go above 60fps; frame rate would remaining at below 60fps and dipping down to 25-30fps or less, at which point using a 770 or 7950 would make no difference at all, as the bottleneck is with the CPU.

I wouldn't recommend making your decision between the 770 and 7950/7970 using SCII as the game is heavily CPU limited...instead, I would suggest you base your decision on what other games that you play the most, before deciding going red or green.

Fair enough.

I think the GTX 770 is sounding best from a performance - price perspective. It'll cost me about a tenner more than a GTX 680.

My CPU is an i7 920 @ 3.8 Ghz so I don't think that will bottleneck it (or will it :p)?

Hate to say this, but even the fastest CPU on the consumer market right now it would be still be a bottleneck for SCII :p

Each player with nearly hundreds units swarming the same places would cause frame rate falls to hell even if people were using a Haswell i5 4770K overclocked to 4.8GHz :D

Also, the fact that the game barely make use of more than two cores doesn't help with the situation, considering frame rate would have been much better, if 3rd and 4th cores were used properly.

Ah ok. Well forgetting SC2 I'll probably just play a variety of games, whatever comes out that takes my fancy really.

I know that logically the 7950 offers ridiculously good value, but for £50~ more I find the 770 pretty tempting, especially as I plan on sticking to 1920x1200 so the vRAM should more than suffice!

price really ati 7950 most oc to 7970 with ease 200 pound.

cheapest 770 gtx 320 ish.

7950 is the sweet spot for 1080/1200

+1

7950 currently has Crysis 3, Bioshock and farcry Blood Dragon free and is a fantastic card.

I get 58 fps @800core 1250mem in battlefield Telah Market 64 player in ultra 1200x1920 res,

or overclocked 1170mhz 1575 74-90fps...

Ivy Bridge clocked to 4.5Ghz.

In my opinion buy card and add another one if you want to run three screens..
