Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

Damn that m18x is tempting! If i hadn't already just bought a m17x from the members market on here i'd be talking myself into buying it.

There isn't a single processor available in laptops that doesn't bottleneck twin 680Ms, and I'm fairly sure something like the i7 3740QM will bottleneck it so much there is next to no difference between it and a single 680M chip other than the headaches with Enduro, weight, heat etc. The 3920 makes it just about justifiable if you're playing BF3 but otherwise the setup is literally too powerful for a laptop

True to an extent although with a 3940XM you will be able to overclock quite a bit provided you have a decent cooling tray. You are also future proofing substantially. If current games don't make the GTX680s sweat much, they will in a year or two. I am fairly convinced that some current GPU-heavy titles on max settings still make full use of SLI despite the CPU limitations even at stock. It is one of those situations where you can be rest assured that with games due to be released, the bottleneck will not be an issue especially at max settings. I would not buy a laptop system without an unlocked high end CPU though. It would be a waste of 2 GPUs (especially GTX680s).

Thanks for the reply Mark the thread lives on! i was umm'ing and ahh'ing whether to get it or not but i came to the same conclusion and didn't bother in the end, especially that the new range can be ordered now aswell.

I wonder when we will start seeing the alienware 17's showing up on the outlet... - Adam

Possible month or two from now. People have to order them and use a little and sent them back :P for repair/replacement/refund :)
and btw this m18x with dual 7970 was a good offer tbh

Hi guys. I also got the recent R4 with 3d and 680 in my basket but thought it was £200 too much. I saw a scratch and dent model the other day with 7970 for under £800 delivered so even with the new ones coming, I'd be quite happy with a current machine with 7970 as long as the price is right.

I have a feeling the refurbed R5's will cost a lot more than current refurbs, even right back to when they were first released on the outlet last June/July. I noticed the prices on the outlet are normally about 40% less than a new model. That would put the per-comfig'ed machine with 780m costing around £1500+.

I think they will drop the new pricing before too long - there really is nothing to the price increases other than greed. When you see you can get a 17" with 765 and haswell from overclockers for £880 with a 256gb ssd, the similar specced alienware is £1300 with a regular 750gb hd - no real need to gouge so badly.

Got a R4 with 7970 any1 ? £999.07

Apart from that. Does any one knows if Dell will put the "new" ATI card as well in R5 (or whatever they going to call it) We see the 780 now but where is 8970? I hope that will be similar situation like in current R4 generation that AMD will be just as quick as 780 but will costs considerably lesscompare to 780
