Missing girl 15, runs off with Maths teacher.

Bump

So he has been sent down for child abduction - sentence on Friday, but he could get up to 7 years.

What do we all think? Also, why is her name being kept out of the media now "cant be named for legal reasons" etc etc. A bit pointless when you can just google it and you get her name up...

I'm split on this one, to be honest. She went voluntarily, albeit stupidly, along with him so it's difficult to view this in the same category as someone who runs off with an actual child, i.e. someone below the age of 10.

That said, he's a teacher, given a position of responsibility and the number 1 rule:

*Do not **** your students.

Break that rule, expect jail time. Not hard to figure it out really.

Amazing how shes basically got away with it. I know he should have known better but even so.

I don't really know what I think about this but what struck me was how even now months later the girl maintained she was a willing participant and even stood up in court and explained how he only went with her after she said she was running away anyway and he couldn't talk her out of it.

He is clearly guilty of something, you can't go around having relationships with 15 year olds, but child abduction?

I do feel sort of sorry for the bloke to be perfectly honest. I mean, it's not like he dragged her kicking and screaming to France. She was in court and clearly upset at the fact he was going to jail - it just seems silly. It's purely a technicality.

What I'd like is for him to get about a year max, then come out and the two get together and live "happily" ever after...

A big two fingers to so many people if that happened! :D

Yeah, the legal system does seem rather too black and white in this case. Surely the sentencing will be able to differentiate between what happened here and forceful abduction against the child's will.

When she's 16 will they give up the hunt?
She's 16 now.

I kinda like that idea. She is 16 now and still likes the guy / feels sorry for him. Granted she's still a child but an old one that is and she consented. BBC News is going "omg paedophilia" when technically it's ephebophilia which is a preference to later teens 15-19. I know, me being pedantic, but while it's still a 'crime', it's a lesser crime than paedophilia. We're not talking about that Mark Bridger guy who went after April Jones.

Suicide is apparently vogue.

That's the problem with our historic law, needs updating, if she consented whilst he was in a position of trust, she must have trusted him. He should have gone to jail, I agree with that, but for a 2 years max.
