I graduated last June with a degree in Environmental Science and had primarily been looking for jobs in the Environmental sector for the last 12 months. At last count I had 124 rejection emails/letters in my application folder on my desktop and I was beginning to loose all hope.

Last week however I was offered a 2 year graduate position with a very well respected and large Environmental consultancy firm. The job looked interesting and varied, was in the subject area I had studied in and offered good career progression. It would however mean relocation to the other end of the country some 500 miles from my family and friends.

I thought I had hit the jackpot, that was until this morning.

Today I received a phone call offering me another graduate position which I had applied for on a whim 4 months ago, never really thinking I would get anywhere with it. It had been over 3 weeks since my final interview and I thought I had lost it to be honest.

They called today and offered me a Business Change and IT graduate position. This is again a large and well respected company this time in the in the financial sector. This is totally out of my comfort zone but with fantastic prospects for training and progression. The training and accreditation I would receive as part of this position looks excellent and the salary package for this position is significantly better than the one I have already been offered. As an added bonus I will not need to relocate either as the office is just 20 mile away.

I never in a million years thought I would find myself in this position and I have already turned down a funded MSc offer as I really want to work. I am having a really hard time deciding what to do next and have until Monday to make up my mind.

I know a lot of people here work in IT and similar roles so thought I would ask if anyone has any insights that might help me come to a decision.

Did I read that right, sir?

On a serious note buddy, I work in change management for a large (frankly, less respected financial organisation) and I love it - every day is so varied due to the massive changes happening in the industry.

I can't say much more without knowing the details of the job, but frankly I have found the financial institutions the best at looking after their staff and and developing them - this is a massive thing you ought to consider.

Sounds like your in a pretty darn good position whatever you do.

Moving away from home may do you the power of good regarding independence away from your family and friends but on the other hand you may miss them terribly.

I had a similar choice to make many years ago and chose to move away to new pastures. and I din't regret it at all. Though it was a bit lonely the first 6-12 months.

Take the close job in financial services (great industry for future prospects) and do a Masters in your spare time.

Financial services companies look after and develop their employees. The financial services industry in Britain is obviously huge, and if you're lucky enough to be in it without having to work in the big smoke, then grab it with both hands.
