It is my wifes 30th later this year and she has always wanted to stay in a castle. Has anyone here done likewise? Either stayed in a castle which is now run as a hotel or hired one exclusively for the weekend? If so, can anyone provide any good recommendations.

Thanks

I've stayed in The Witchery in Edinburgh, Coombe Abbey nr Coventry and Thornbury Castle.

Loved them all and they all have their own charm. Really you should choose if you want an isolated castle with grounds, or somewhere with city buzz around you.

I think the best time I had was at Coombe Abbey but really the experience is down to what you make of it between you.

We hired Fort Clonque off the coast of Alderney last year.

It was very cool indeed with a group of friends.

Some ok places for meals on the island, we did one day where the guys had to provide lunch and dinner without actually buying anything so we had to go fishing, collecting cockles etc.

Hire bikes for going round the island were fun too.

Many thanks for the responses. I am down on the SE Coast so depending on how long we go for will depend on how far we travel. Amberley Castle does look amazing though.

I got married at Amberley, we booked the whole castle for the day so no random visitors

You get all the rooms included that way

Its really nice place, not exactly cheap when there though ;)

Oh and it plays havoc with mobile signals, I think the walls are rather thick ;)
