Basic Sky box to Sky+HD how to go about it ?

Basically downstairs I have Sky+HD and a basic sky box in another room. How can I upgrade the basic box to a Sky+HD box ?

You can, and presuming you're using a Sky free-to-view card or better then you'll get the basic HD channels too.

Features such as recording & playback are tied to your satellite package though. If you have multi-room already on the old box then you will be able to record. All you need do is ring Sky and tell them you have a new box and ask them to pair the existing viewing card with the new box. If you just have a Sky free-to-view card in the old box then pairing it with the new box won't make it record.

if you ain't got 2 sat feeds where the standard box is it will need cabling in. Or if you plug in the box on a single cable you will need to switch single feed mode on but you can only record 1 channel at a time.

Right I only have one but I'm not bothered about recording more than 1 channel at a time

I have a proper multiroom subscription so I just call them and have my viewing card paired then

i recently did this,

you need to tell them you have upgraded the box yourself to a sky+ HD one and they then need to not only pair it, but enable the live pause and record functions.

make sure they enable that otherwise there is no point in the new box. mine worked but had no recording functions until i phoned them up and got them enabled.

you also need 2 separate feeds going into the box instead of one.

Okay may be moving house soon so will hold off until I know what's happening but I will remember the advice thanks

your not going to buy the box off sky are you?

i bought mine plus a wireless connector off gumtree for £25 altogether, from sky the same thing would have cost me over £200 as a new customer.

so basically when sky was installed, i told the engineer, i have a sky+ hd box already, i want 2 feeds going into the second room and that either he could pair the box i have or install the multi room box and i would phone sky and pair it myself.

he paired the box himself but he never told sky i had changed the boxes, so i had 1 box which couldnt record or pause, so even though the box worked and the card was paired i had to get sky to activate the recording functions by sending signals from their end or by flicking a switch on their system.

either way i wouldnt buy a box direct from them when they are available for peanuts on gumtree.

No will be buying from gumtree
