Problem with GPU Block - Dangerous?

Bought (not from ocuk) an EK7950 Acetel block. Brand new.

Gave it the once over - all looked good - and started tonight to build my new watercooled system.

First job was to take off the bog standard cooler from the gpu; no problem. Then clean up and place thermal pads and paste ; again no problem.

Next - look to fit block - Again no problem.

Then screw together.... We have a problem :(

There are nine screw holes and eight work as expected but the ninth will not accept the screw (or any of the eight others) - a careful look it is clear that although the scew hole has been drilled , the top has not been countersunk (I think that is an accurate description - a slight dip in the otherwise flat surface to both semi guide the screw and give it an easier run?).

I managed to move the poor hole (all nine do screw in/out) towards the outer rim so that the centre four (which obviously take the strain)are working.
The one I have left off is the one nowhere near any ram or vrm cooling - bottom left ; looking at the gpu withj the gpu in the centre and ram running round it - dvi, hdmi etc connectors to left.

I will look to get a new fitting from EKG but do members think it safe to set up and run temporarily as is ?
It looks and feels secure - certainly round the cpu .

It's so bl....y frustrating when everything grinds to a halt all because of one screw fitting :(

Do not believe this is anything to do with the supplier.

The block , with the screw fittings already in place, comes in a sealed(by EK) bag.

It's a manufacturing fault.

Still a problem I could do without as new box and watercooling will have to be deferred until this is resolved - I just hope that there are no problems with the xspc kit as it looks unlikely I'll be building until long after the 14 day period ocuk give.

This and the other issues that can arise were why I'd not WC before - hopefully it will be worth it in the end but at a minimum of £300 it's a large gamble and I do not want to have to simply write it off to experience :(:(

well to be honest, I see no problem at all tbh.
If it is not chanfered (or countersunk referring to OP), you can just use other screw heads of the same size or length to screw it in.

Especially when your screw position is not in the central location and it feels secure, it should be alright IMO.

But as you can exchange it for a new one, go ahead :)
But yer - temporarily it should be fine.

It is a reference 7950 pcb.- it is not a problem ref the fitting of the block to the board i.e. screw goes through the hole that exists for this purpose in the pcb and then should screw into the block screw hole but it will not. No problems with alignment etc

Late last night I decided that it is new it would be daft to try and make it work - better to e-mail to ask if I could have a new screw hole posted. Am awaiting reply but am hopeful - given the alternative is for me to send the whole block back , which would in the circumstances be at their expense!

I would have bought from ocuk but they have not carried an EK 7950 block for some time ; so I had no option but to go elsewhere :(

I am back up and running with original cooler re-installed. Runs a couple of degrees cooler now it's running MX4 :)

That's why water cooling scares me.

What, because of a manufacturing fault with a block? I'm sure that's impossible to happen with any air cooler ever made, it's clearly a WC-only problem.

To the OP - did you email EK, or the supplier? The supplier would more than likely only be able to swap the whole block, EK may be able to just send you the part you need.

Supplier only so far - I have been thinking about trying direct with manufacturer but have decided to wait and see how the supplier reacts .

Well, see what the supplier says, but if I were you I would email EK as there's more chance of them being able to sort it out easily rather than sending the whole block back and waiting for a new one.

Thinking about it .... Why not?

Good idea :)- will give it a go Monday.

It's hardly a big deal - one small mounting screw point - and I suspect that EK will hold a fair few whereas the supplier may only hold the blocks themselves.

Precisely my point, it's fairly unlikely the supplier will have the individual parts whereas EK have been known to help out with small items like screws and mounting hardware, so if they can then it would be less hassle.
