hi all,

ive got the new 4770k and MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming mobo with 2 x 4gb Corsair vengeance pro 1866mhz,
Graphics is 1x evga 780 going SLI soon

Is 8gb enough as some people say get 16gb for gaming?

If so am I better with 2 x 8gb or 4x4gb

Yeah 8GB is more than enough. I only got 16GB as I sometimes run a couple of virtual machines and was using up all 8GB often then.

8GB will keep you right for gaming.

You only need more if running multiple gaming clients and running lots of apps at the same time. I have 16GB in my rig and I need that for running AutoCAD Civil 3d due to the work I do.

Get yourself some Samsung Green its relatively cheap in comparison to some of the other brands out there with fancy fins and romp stomp marketing names and overclocks really well, proof is in the forums on here.

Go for 2x4Gb so you can run dual channel and also upgrade later (if needed)

8gb for gaming is the best way to go. Can run better timings with 8gb and gain a couple of FPS for free.

8Gb is fine for gaming.

The only reason im running 16Gb is because im on X79 and the Samsung Green was dirt cheap at the time.

Meh. You lot are a bunch of "female cats". Lob in as much ram as your motherboard allows. Fill it up. Why would you have empty slots for anyway... that's silly :-p

I can think of a few good reasons not too fill it up as you say. For example, the more ram you have, the more strain you put on the cpu IMC. More ram can limit your attainable overclock on the cpu. As much ram as you can use comes more in too play using vm or video encoding etc - so unless the machine is being used for these purposes then more than 8 gig of ram is unnecessary. Money not spent on extra unused ram is money available to spend elsewhere on the system which may be of more benefit according to your needs etc. 8 gig of ram is more than enough for gaming IMHO.

:D You know i was joking right ... I myself only populate 2 slots out of 4 currently . However i personally do feel a slight extra zip with 16 over 8 for almost everything. Im talking small measures here and ive only had 16 in my main rig for 3 days (along with a significant mobo and cpu upgrade}

My bad - did not realise you were joking - I need to chill, and not take thing's so seriously all the time:D

8gb is more than enough even with running lots of things in the backgroud whilst playing some big game e.g. gw2, bf3, crysis 3 and so on
