Nelson Mandela has become critically ill in hospital, the South African presidency has announced.

In a statement, President Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela's doctors were "doing everything possible to get his condition to improve".

"He is in good hands," said Mr Zuma.

South Africa's first black president, who is 94, was taken to hospital earlier this month for the third time this year, with a recurrent lung infection.

The statement said Mr Zuma had visited Mr Mandela in hospital in Pretoria on Sunday evening and was told the former president's condition had worsened over the past 24 hours.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands," said President Zuma, using Mr Mandela's clan name by which he is widely known in South Africa.

Mr Zuma appealed for prayers for Mr Mandela and his medical team.

Just saw this on the news. Doesn't sound like he's got too long left.

He's 94 years old. He's going to die soon. He's an old man, not the messiah. People need to get a grip.

He's just a very naughty boy

I find it hard to find any sympathy for a terrorist.
+1

South Africa didn't exactly become the Jewel of Africa because of his efforts, and frankly I'm sick of hearing about his every sniffle and snotty nose. Why the world's media constantly suck up to him is beyond me, plenty of other people have done far more for the world.

He is one of the few people on this earth that I admire. The world is a better place for his presence. I hope he recovers from this.

He was a terrorist by definition as he was the leader of the military wing of the ANC, however this was in an environment of State sponsored terror, so it really depends on your political affiliations as to whether he was a terrorist or freedom fighter.

Personally, I don't really understand why he is lionised as much as he is, but rightly or wrongly he became a symbol of resistance to oppression and that is how he will be remembered no doubt.

South Africa is a more equal and democratic society thanks to his efforts. He's adored by the vast majority of people in his country.
Tell that to my mums mate who was hacked to pieces, tell that to my best friends family who had to flee because they were white. Tell that to an old work colleague who's family were tied up while they burnt their dogs alive and farmland.

I had a cousin and uncle who had to flee the country because of their efforts, they had 5 (I think, can't remember if it was 5 or 6) friends killed during his time in power, I work with a South African and know a few others (2 white and one black) who hate what the country has become. It's a cesspit that is only marginally more respectable than the other failed states throughout Africa, it is a racist state that most find it convenient to forget.

Equal rights to being shot in the face for your car, and poverty for all,
yep, that was totally worth the right to share a toilet or a bus.

Good luck on trying to introduce democracy into a tribal culture, it'll work out about as well as doing the same in Afghanistan.

He's adored by the vast majority of people in his country.
Some of whom believe you can cure AIDS by raping a virgin and that gays eat poo.

It's not a more equal place, it's a great place to be a wealthy black. Otherwise you are ******. Wealthy white? They are after you. Poor black? They don't give a **** about you.

The country is loosely democratic in that people can vote, but there is no real choice.
