Nelson Mandela 'critically ill in hospital'

I know a lot of South Africans who would disagree with that....more than would agree for that matter.

I'm the same.. I work with a lot of South Africans (black and white) and none of them like him. All of them say he is a western hero, not an African one.

People who are desperate for him to recover are ignoring a certain fact of life.

He's 94. He is constantly ill and his body is too old to recover to full fitness. Once someone of this age is as ill as he is, they normally stay in a perpetual state of ill health until they eventually die. At that age, and with a serious lung problem, it is very doubtful that he can breath unassisted and he will probably be bedridden and short of breath for the rest of his life. Maybe the kindest thing is for him to go peacefully.

It may be sad for many people, but if I hear the word "tragic" as I always seem to when someone dies, I will rage.

Yeh well done Nelson, Africa is such a nice place everyone wants to live there..

NOT

I can see it now, Britain in national morning over his death, statues everywhere and forced min's silence!

I had a cousin and uncle who had to flee the country because of their efforts, they had 5 (I think, can't remember if it was 5 or 6) friends killed during his time in power, I work with a South African and know a few others (2 white and one black) who hate what the country has become. It's a cesspit that is only marginally more respectable than the other failed states throughout Africa, it is a racist state that most find it convenient to forget.

Its a mess, every time I've visited has been a total eye opener.

Being driven through one of many slums, lots of people stood looking for work which doesn't exist, banging on the side of the 4x4, then you see brand new Range Rovers parked up in the same areas owned by the few which have 'everything'.

He walked in the cold air. Freezing breath on a window pane. Lying and waiting.
A man in the dark in a picture frame so mystic and soulful.
I voice reaching out and a pearcing cry calling out. It's stays with you until...
The feeling is gone only you and I it means nothing to me.
This means nothing to me. Oooh Mandela.

“When Mandela dies we will kill you whites like flies” – Mzukizi Gaba (ANC)

Guess we'll find out soon enough if he meant it...

When I lived in SA during my teens, my parents (and friends of family) were always a bit nervous that if Mandela died, trouble might erupt as a result.

Worked in SA a few times.. Only place i've been, apart from Peckham rye, where i have genuinely 100% been on my guard 24/7 (i slept with 1 eye open)

Weird, horrible place, massive poverty and inequality with a very fake veneer of equality.

Fun times on the horizon in SA if/when he dies.

I won't miss him and it will likely cause problems, but from the point of view that he's a father and grandfather it wll be sad for his family. I do wish he wasn't in the media spotlight so much though.

Given the kind of oppression that was rife in SA, I don't see how else he could have achieved what he achieved. At least the violence was for a reason.

The reason for SA's plight is not down to him though, it's down to greedy morons like Mbeki and Zuma.

*grew up in Apartheid SA, so knows the score*
