I currently have the i5 3570K (Ivybridge) and have the upgrade urge so was just wondering if anyone thinks its worth upgrading to an i7 3770K ?

Depends what you do with it. A 3570K is fast enough for most people however, the extra threads of the 3770K may help if you render videos or something similar. You will notice little to no difference in games or applications which use 4 cores or less.

No offence, but you have a problem :p

If you feel the need to play with some new toys, maybe you should think about building a second rig (mini-ITX for LANs maybe?) rather than upgrading a rig which doesn't need it just for the sake of it.

Or not, just my $0.02.

I currently have my i5 3570K oc'd to 4.5GHz and was wondering if I am likely to get more with a i7 3770K ?

for those ready to jump in with bf3 or 4

take a look at this article ;)

http://www.techbuyersguru.com/CPUgaming.php

hyperthreading is basically a waste of time in games unless programmed for

even then it can actually hinder in some games.

bf4 will be same as bf3. so very similar results.

only real reason to upgrade is if you were going to two cards and then you probably wont notice anything much.

I would only upgrade if your current chip is a voltage hog or runs hot/poor clocker ect

the 3770k's tend to use much less voltage compared to the 3570k's which means less heat and generally better clockers

can you do some fraps runs exact same settings before and after cheers

min max and avg on caspain border 64 man server

at same speed cpu wise will be interesting to see.

I have just gone from a 2500K @ 4.4 to a 3770K @ 4.8. Can't tell the difference in the BF3 or any other game I have played so far.
With a single graphics card there wont be any difference. However with sli or xfire, the extra threads on the 3770k do help with bf3. With a 3570k at 4.5ghz, my sli'd gtx 670's were maxing at 80% use and the game wasnt that smooth. Switching to a 3770k even at stock showed an improvement in gpu usage, (91%) and a much smoother running game. Some users used to experience stutter in bf3 with ht enabled, though this was fixed months ago. Not that i ever had any issues with it on two hyperthreaded cpu's, (i7 920 + i7 930).

Noobcannon's link above is a good read that shows the difference a ht equipped i7 cpu can have over an i5 in bf3 with xfire/sli.

I have always been told i5K for gaming, i7k for video rendering and running multiple applications etc.

That's good as a general rule, although with the next gen consoles featuring eight core processors it is likely that we will see new games being increasingly optimised for eight threads.

The pc games at the moment that utilise ht are pretty thin on the ground tbh. Bf3 and crysis 3 are two that i can think off. In bf3 it only really shows gains with multi gpu's. For a decent modern single card an i5 such as the 3570k is more than enough. If i hadnt went sli id still be using the 3570k. Was an ok clocker and i had it running nice and stable. The 3770k is proving to be a bit trickier so far though.:(
