Afternoon all,

In my quest for a relaxing do nothing for 2 weeks holiday I've stumbled across the Cape Verde Islands. Has anyone been in August?

I'm looking at a hotel in Boa Vista that a friend has recently got back from for his honeymoon and he said it was really good, I was preparing to book when I noticed the rainy season is the end of July until October.

OH is a teacher and I'm involved with schools so can only take holiday in school holidays. I'm specifically looking at going from 15/08/2013 for 2 weeks.

It looks like they get a fair bit of rain in August - but most websites mention this is in one massive rain storm in a few hours then the rest of the month is fine. They do mention reduced hours of sunlight though (some websites say as low as 5 which sounds a bit too low)?

Previously we've gone to Sharm el Sheikh, we are after somewhere nice to relax and do nothing in decent weather with a maximum flight time of about 6 hours.

So anybody been in August or can offer any advice?

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this. I had looked at Cape Verde but was put off due to reports of high crime rates and things like that.

There have been a number pf post relating to Cape Verde and I was surprised to read so many people having enjoyed it there as my sister and her husband went a couple of years ago and said it was the worst place they had ever been. And they travel loads and loads.

First I've heard of any crime?

I can see why some people hate it, my friend mentioned there were probably about 1000 non tourist people on the island he was on and there was nothing to do outside of the hotel.

For the type of holiday I'm after (relaxing and do nothing) this sounds ideal.

We looked at the Cape Verdes as a quiet getaway, but due to it's undeveloped-ness, (which may well appeal!) decided against it in case of a medical emergency and needing rapid access to modern medicine (Haemophiliac). We decided on Mexico (Riviera Maya) instead - but will certainly keep an eye on the Cape Verdes as it looks incredible...

My GF has been to Cape Verde and enjoyed it but she loves just sunbathing for 2 weeks... Obviously it is very much a stay in resort type place and i think it is dangerous to go wandering.

It is not for me. I prefer to explore a bit when on holiday.

I think as long as you choose a good hotel and just want to lie down/swim/sunbathe for 2 weeks then it would be alright.

No idea about the weather. If you want constant sunshine, blazing hot temps and no rain you cant go wrong with the baelarics or the greek islands

That's basically what we want to do. We've look at other places closer (Greek Islands) and found that because they are closer and cheaper the quality isn't quite there and I know from experience you get loads of families with annoying loud kids. Cape Verde is just that bit too expensive for your average family and a bit further away than a standard south of Spain holiday.

Still plenty of lovely kid free/not so busy hotels/resorts in greece. Me and the gf are going back to Kefalonia this year. Beautiful place and still not too spoilt by tourism and over development. Reasonable prices as well.

Im sure Cape Verde will be lovely though for a relaxing/resort holiday. My GF loved it.

First I've heard of any crime?

It was a couple of years ago when my girlfriend and I were researching it, but what we read did put us off at the time. It was something along the lines of people coming across from mainland Africa (places like Senegal) and causing trouble/committing crimes. We ended up going to Mexico instead.

I'm genuinely interested to hear what other people's experiences have been though. It certainly looks like the type of place we would enjoy :).

The place we are looking at (Riu Touareg) appears to be pretty locked down and have a private beach - I probably wouldn't need to go outside this area.

Went to Sal about six years ago.

People were great, very friendly. Nothing to really do on the island apart from subathe, eat and drink, although I did do a tour and wandered down to the town most evenings. Diving was OK, though not spectacular.

Was a very quiet and relaxing holiday. That being said I probably wouldn't go back as it was a little too quiet for me.

Stayed in Riu touareg last month. Absolutely fantastic place for a relaxing holiday. Don't expect much to do other than maybe go quad biking but for a lazy all inclusive week I loved it

Staff there were brilliant, it's so clean, so friendly. I was given a bottle of bubbly on my birthday and the food is overall great with lots to choose from.

Weather is red hot and it has a constant wind blowing which feels fantastic, although easy to deceive you into thinking your getting less burned than you are.

15km of open beach... No one on it except me and my gf and some crabs etc on an evening.

Best relaxing time I've had.
