All blood is screened.
So why ban the gays?
All blood is screened.
because if you get prisoners blood, you will become a prisoner.

In case one HIV gets through?
i imagine the amount of screening needed would be excessively high.
Given that the questionnaire still has basically "are you gay/bisexual male" on it, I'm guessing most of it is not screened or else that would be unnecessary.
They screen all blood regardless of the source.
so again if all blood is screened why exclude certain groups?
http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/current_issues/joint_statement_on_blood_safety.html said:All blood donations are tested on every occasion for evidence of infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV), and syphilis...
... The tests used are now extremely sensitive. However, there is a period just after becoming infected when a donor's blood could test negative yet still pass on the infection to the recipient- this is known as the window period and is one reason why it is so important that a donor is accurate in reporting infection risks e.g. travel.
So why ban the gays?
An old ban that needs to be lifted. Some of the rules are totally arbitrary and make no sense.
I can have some randomer stick pins in me and give blood after 4 months, yet protected sex with another man is 12 months?
You cant give blood if you received blood anything up 33 years ago (1st Jan 1980). 34? That's fine!

As far as I know it isn't a blanket ban now, it is more dependent on your sexual history up to one year of sleeping with man unprotected.
I think the original ban had something to do with the higher than average prevailence of HIV amongst the male gay communities in the 80's.
The rules still say "with or without a condom". So even protected sex with a man gets you 12 months exclusion.
Oddly, even though straight black men are at a higher prevalence of HIV/AIDS than average, they are not excluded.

Yes there's a 12 month deferral after having had sex with another man, but that doesn't mean gays are banned.
Why would straight black men be excluded? Exclusions aren't made on the basis of prevalence. All samples are tested.
well they pretty much are, unless they decide to go over a year without sex....
but you can't say "no giving blood if you've had sex with a black man in 12 months"
no thatsays anyone who has had sex in Africa regardless of race. not all black people have been to Africa.
Would you have any moral/ethical dilemmas with it?
