reservator 1 V2 passive water cooling set-up

Hi Chaps,

A friend at work has given me one of these to play around with. I want to use it to cool my 8350 and my 7970 (reference PCB).

I've had a look for a few bits:

Am I on the right track with these? Would it be worth it?I'm new to watercooling outside of the closed loop antec kueller 920 I'm using at the moment.

Also, the tubing that came with the kit originally is 12x8mm, would the 1/2" tubing here be about equibaent and play nice?

if it's not up to scratch, I'd think about fitting a rad, pump and res into my case - a Zalman z11 plus.

Its been a while since I used a Reserator 1, but i'm pretty sure that tubing will be fine. I'm not sure how well it will perfrom with the CPU/GPU using it though. Mine used to get fairly hot when running an E6600 with an ATi 4870 in the loop.

You only need 4 barbs dont you? Or are you replacing the ones on the tower too?
 
Yeah, I'll be replacing the ones in the tower, as he hasn't found those yet.

Anything else I need do you think? apart from coolant additives. and are those blocks up to scratch for the cpu and gpu?

Think I'm going to give it a go and replace it with new kit if it's not that great. Will post pics and before and after temps if anyone's interested?

Had a 2600k @ 4.2ghz on one of these with the pump ripped out and replaced by a d5, did not cope well at all.
 
All reserator's don't use G1/4 threads - so the barbs will not fit.
3/8 tube is the largest that will go over the stock barbs (if you find them)
Plastic G1/4 thread 1/2 barbs can be used (crossed threaded) with some ptfe tape.

The pump in a Res1 is weak so low restriction / high flow block are a must. (so not what you've picked)
Or remove the stock pump and do a snorkel mod with an external pump.
Without the mod the faster pump will just short circut the large water volume of the Res1.

It will not cool your cpu and gpu at load. Your'll need two Res1 for that
With a 240 and the Res1 you could run passive for office/net etc
then turn the fans on when gaming (headset/speakers will mask the noise anyway)

Passive watercooling usually gives temp equal too or above stock cooler temp
With the right blocks and some careful planning it can be a LOT less - but it's not really designed for OCing or low temps
It's perfect for OdB cooling of HTPC spec hardware.

I ran a OCed 2500k and 260gtx on my Res2 (50% more surface area that a Res1) folding 24/7 at load without issue.

Best off using antifreeze and dionised water, due to the amount of liquid involved it is too expensive to use "specialist" water cooling fluids in a reserator build.


All reserator's don't use G1/4 threads

The type he has does.


Your going to run into issues.

The Reserator is aluminium, your blocks are copper your going to get build up issues.

Not if he uses coolant with corrosion inhibiting properties (Antifreeze is perfect for this as its designed for mixed metal systems, I.E steel water pump blades alu engine block and copper/brass radiator).

I own a pair of V1's that I used to run in series, combined they were able to cool a heavily overclocked HD7950 and a Xeon E3-1245v2 (think i7 3770), they are very underrated mostly because the stock pump/tubing/blocks are pretty poor, two of them with a D5 plus decent blocks and 3/8 tubing with new compression fittings and I was laughing. One tower will cool either your CPU or GPU but not both.

by the sounds of it, I'm asking too much of it to do what I want really.

So it's down either use it to cool just the GPU, leaving the kueller on the CPU or bite the bullet and get a full watercooling set up and a new case :confused:

I know I can get 5ghz out of the 8350, it just gets too hot :D
 
Get a 1080/1260 rad and run it externally? They can handle a fair bit of heat with little to no air...would let you use any case you want.
 
The reservator is probably not up to the job, sounds fun to play around with though!

If your willing to have something like th reservator externally, i would go for what PGI is suggesting, value for money wise on the cooling performance you get, those huge phobya rads are mad awesome.
 
I've updated the cpu cooler to a non-copper one.

Could you guys confirm these bits are compatible and what I need before I pull the plug?

I remember seeing some ghetto mods using that concept, fairly sure they wrapped the tower in card or something to direct airflow better too.
 
I took the internal pump out of my Reserator and used the metal screw plug that was shipped in the accessories to fill the power cord hole. The plastic quick connects were replaced by high flow Koolance alternatives - and the whole thing just acts as a 2.5L reservoir.

I used a Reserator as a res in an external water cooling loop, with external ehim 1250 pump with an inline dual rad with quiet fans and it worked really well. they also get lots of comments when people see it.


Go for it, you can always add a rad inline for extra cooling if you want!
