Will I benefit from upcgrading to self-contained water cooling?

Morning

I'm currently running an i5 3570k with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. I'm oc's to 4.2 but if I go to 4.3 I get some uncomfortable temps on the core (85 plus). Would I notice any drop in temps by changing the 212 to a self contained CPU water cooler - something like say a Corsair H80i?

possibly yes, but you'd see similar drops in temp by just changing to a better air cooler
I'm assuming you are looking at a compact cooler due to potential memory size issues?

there are plenty of decent air coolers that are compatible with big ram

what voltage are you running? Ivy is well known for high temps due to TIM inside the heatspreader - not much you can do about that and even full watercooling struggles to keep an ivy cool

just to be clear, what voltage are you running at? what is it set to in the bios and what does CPU-Z report?

please don't tell me it's set on "auto" in the bios

I recently did a haswell build at 4.5ghz with a Phanteks PH-TC12DX (vengenace ram as well) with no issues at 1.25v
hits low 80's with Prime95, and stays below 80 in normal gaming

I'm not on the machine at the moment so can't get the exact number but no, it's not on auto. It's set to the default whatever that is (used a guide).

And I'm sorry for being such a pauper that I'm unwilling to delid a CPU that costs a mere £170. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY QUID. I can just imagine the conversation with my other half.

"Yeah, you know that CPU I bought a few weeks ago?"
"Yes, what about it?"
"I've got to buy another one."
"Why?"
"I took it apart and broke it."
"Why the **** did you do that you ****ing idiot?"
"A guy on the internet laughed at me when I said I wouldn't so I thought that I would."
/kicks me in the ********

do it. kaapstaad did it to a 900£ cpu!

And which cpu was this? Currently only Ivy bridge and Haswell processors can be delidded, no enthusiast line processors...

Delidding is worth it. Use the hammer and vice method, anyway there's no point in him delidding yet as he can get better cooling by swapping his cooler.

Look at:
Alpenfohn k2
Silver arrow extreme
Noctua ndh-14
Phanteks phtc14pe

I wouldn't go with a CLC, I just don't trust them.

The difference in temps won't be night and day or you may not even see a gain. Noise level will most likely be the same as well...

Clearly, the only real benefit I see is Corsair Link feature of the cooler and that's about it....
