Car shortlist - MR2 / MX5 (mk1 or mk2?)

Ask that goodwood sports cars guy that I linked to above. He will have addressed any issues the car has. Wouldn't want to buy a cheap one from a random car dealer

I'll give him a shout, but sadly he is 400 miles away about! so a bit of a trek!.

Fly up, drive back!
Hehe, it's an option & not a bad idea!

I do quite like this one,

You have to phone him up, his site is rarely up to date.

When I picked mine up form him Saturday I got the train up, drove back. Worked out roughly the same as flying and about the same time with getting to and from airports by train.

Not bad!, shame they are all so far away (had a look for some in the south coast area, but no luck so far!) - would like to be able to pop to them to view a couple of times (to check through the massive list of potential problems!)

Thanks for linking this. I'm probably going to get myself an mx5 next year and would rather buy from a dude like this than some random on Autotrader.

Ay the guy does seem pretty good for the info, some great tips on his website - an amazing find.

Also - just to throw it out there, what over roadsters are pretty new driver (but older/more mature) friendly, around the 5k mark second hand (with a good few years of low mileage driving left on them) are there which could be equally suited to the MX5, as to be honest - part of me seems daunted by the 101 considerations to avoid rust (as I much prefer the MK1's!)

I've met Steve from Goodwood sports cars a couple of times and he's a top bloke, knows his stuff and only buys and sells decent cars. I would happily buy a 5 from him. Berwick is on the main east coast rail line so its easy to get a train, or Newcastle and Edinburgh are only 60miles away if you want to fly.

What did you get from him Nursie?

Rust is a huge problem on both the mk1 and mk2 MX5's, anyone who says otherwise is telling fibs :p

I had a look at a few "rust free" ones including one that I nearly poked my finger straight through the under side of the sill it was that rotten. I decided that I wanted a mk1 though so lubed up and paid what I had to to get one that looked like you could eat your dinner off the underside.

There are good ones out there but they are in that no mans land of being worth bugger all at the moment so a lot of them are being run on a shoe string and bodged to get through MOTs.

1.8 S-Special in Laguna Blue, The pics before it had some paint/body done are probably still up on his site. And I posted one in the hairdresser thread.

edit. Thought i quoted Azza's post.

May have found one from the guy mentioned (been in email contact with him).

1995 Mazda MX5 Eunos 1.8 V-Special in Chaste White with tan leather seats and trim and new tan hood. Fitted with original Mazda chrome wheels, this car looks superb in this colour scheme. This 1 owner car, imported in 2003, has covered around 95,000 miles and has electric windows and mirrors, lsd, power steering, air con and wood-rimmed steering wheel.

He's going to send across a load of pictures & do more checks on rust - but sounds good so far, got LSD, 1.8, in white & nice trim.

He said it looks almost identical to this one,

What kind of insurance spike would you expect from putting a small spoiler on an MX5 (for modification) would you expect? - as I'm keen to whack on one like the below assuming it's all rust free.

Said spoiler was on the car when you bought it and as far as you knew it was standard....?
:p

Is that pretty common, as it's going to be hard to find a totally unmodded MX5 (due to people putting spoilers, roll bars/chrome style hoops, new seats, exhausts etc) & from my first checks - seems to make 90% of insurers not insure me (when I add the modifications).
