Anyone know much about Cornwall?

I go to Polzeath / Padstow every year. Lovely area.
We drive around Cornwall and have days out at places, lot's to see.

Healey's cider farm is always worth a visit :) (Rattler!)

Love Cornwall, particularly St Ives - my parents first took me there when I was a toddler and again in 1984 when I was 15, which I've always said was our best family holiday ever ... along with the Norfolk Broads, I consider it my favourite part of the UK.

The missus and I haven't been back there for about 10 years or so and it's something we're wanting to rectify one of these days. It depends what you want from a holiday really. Newquay is probably the place more suited to the 18-30 sort of crowd - or it was when I last went anyhow - whereas somewhere like St Ives is a lot more quaint and genteel by comparison.

Personally, I'd choose St Ives any time - I'm now most definitely outside the 18-30 age bracket and I have some very happy memories of past holidays there ... like being in the sea surfing for 6 hours straight, working up a huge appetite in the process, then back to the B&B that overlooked the beach for a shower and down the town for a massive pizza or curry and plenty of beers ... ah happy days :)

St Ives and Newquay will both be crammed with bloody emmets in August (and I'd never go to Newquay anyway, given the choice of almost anywhere else). Try and find somewhere a bit quieter.

I've been meaning to go to Cornwall since I immigrated from South Africa as that's where my family name was originally from (Nancarrow).

Apparently there's a Nancarrow road or something (probably gravel but hey ho) there which I'm dead keen to get a picture of me standing in front of to send my folks.

Can't find it on google :(

Anyway this thread has given me other ideas when I'm there thanks :)

Constantine Bay would be my suggestion.

There's self-catering flats and cottages there, some amazing beaches and cliff walks in the area, plus it's in between Padstow and Newquay so handy for both.

I would go to either Padstow or Falmouth.

Both on the opposite sides, but both lovely places to stay. Falmouth has more beautiful walks and amazing scenery imo, and it can get a bit touristy in summer. However it is still lovely, i went to uni there.

Padstow is a bit smaller, but there are some great places to go!

What is the problem with Camborne or Redruth? Whilst there ex industrial towns with nothing much for tourists to see, they’re not unique to Cornwall. Working in council houses across the county I see many deprived areas, Falmouth & Penzance have large parts which are far worse than Camborne & Redruth yet they are perceived as nice areas.

Penzance perceived as a nice area? Since when? :)

But the truth is you're right. Cornwall has a lot of deprived areas. A lot of drug use. A lot of child abuse...

The scenery is lovely, but Cornwall is a place with a lot of social and economic problems.

My point was that they're not exactly good places to go on holiday (like you pointed out, there isn't much to see), but for the record they're not good places to live either (IMO).

Hes asking as a tourist coming to the county. but yeah, falmouth has some of the poorest areas in the county, if not the country but the rest of the town is a great tourist draw. Not true with camborne or redruth :o

Depends what you want really?

You've got, Port Isaac & Padstow, Trebarwith has a nice pub/restaurant (Port William) Further up the coast you've got Boscastle then Crackington Haven and Bude. Or further up again into Devon there is Clovelly/Hartland.

I've been to Falmouth a few times to visit a friend who went to university there and thought it seemed like quite a nice place, quiet but with a fair few things to do and places to see as a tourist. I'm talking about primarily the bits round the centre, no idea about the less desirable areas.

Will Gill is from Cornwall so might have some suggestions if he sees the thread.
