I often wonder if it even makes sense financially to make a new Half Life game for Valve. Half Life 2 sold around 12 million copies at retail apparently (of course Steam doesn't release sales figures). There are 265,887 people playing Dota 2 right now, at this instant. Nearly 600,000 people watched The International.

I'm willing to bet that Dota 2 makes Valve a lot more money by getting a hell of a lot of people using the Steam platform (which is Valves main goal when the release games, lets be honest).

Tl;dr: Half Life 3 will never come out.

This will be like Duke Nukem all over again. Valve are getting dangerously close to the waiting period whereby no matter how good the game is, it will get bad reviews.

Duke Nukem Forever was just a really bad game, the time it took to be made had nothing to do with it. I'm sure that HL3 will be a critical success, will sell loads of copies and will be a very good game. But people will be expecting too much, they are expecting too much already and the game hasn't even been announced.

Let's be honest... Half-Life 3 will be the best selling game of all time and will catapult Valve to the top of the world's most valuable companies list. Gabe will take over the world, and you naysayers will bow down to him.

Nope, we all know it won't even come close to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 333.

I've carried a torch for a new HL game for a long time. But Valve have long since worn down my patience with their wall of silence.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't buy it if it ever actually came out, but Gabe can go **** himself for his lack of respect for his fans.

Seriously? Entitlement? You think its acceptable that since 2007 Valve have basically given us NOTHING in regards to Half Life 3 or HL2: Episode 3? No release dates? No teaser trailers? No concept art? No plot synopsis? Not even a confirmed promise that the game is on the way at some point in the future?

How much of a rabid fanboy do you have to be to find that level of service totally acceptable?

Surely being a rabid fanboy is what makes you think its a problem?

It hasn't been announced cos they either have nothing to announce or see no reason to announce it until they are ready to do so. Pretty everything you mentioned is what Duke Nukem Forever did, look how well that turned out.

Entitlement is the word of the day, it's the most used word on these forums. :D

I wouldn't really care as much if they didn't leave the story where Episode 2 did. I'd be happy if they just released the script if they weren't going to make it so I can at least read it and see how everything ends up :p But no, I have to wait until Valve learn to count to 3.

I can't figure out the point you're trying to make; selling 12 million copies of HL2 is a pretty good reason for them to make HL3.

They're a business, they're not obligated to announce stuff to anyone until they want to. If they had something worth saying about it, they'd probably say it.

I'm not sure I understand the thought process those who "give up" after a long time passes, as if it changes anything about how good the previous games were and the possibility the next one may be just as.

Same goes for games that are known to be coming out, always hearing that people don't care anymore as it's been too long. Jesus christ people, what are you children? How fickle can one be to change their minds influenced solely on the passage of time and not the product itself.

IS IT HERE YET?, whiners.

Feel better now? :p

It's been 5 years since HL2:Ep2 and almost ten years since HL2.

More than enough time to make even a highly polished AAA game. Let alone a third episode in the vein of the previous two episodes.

Has it really been nearly 10 years since Half Life 2 was released? I feel really old now

Yes it is annoying that after 5 years they still haven't announced anything about another half life or another episode, but then where was it ever said in half life 2 that you are entitled to a half life 3? Would you be happier if Valve just announced that they never had any plans to release anything else in the half life chain?

Valve are under no fan based obligation to produce another half life, and unless producing another half life will make more profit than any other opportunities valve currently has then it won't happen

Are you twelve? It's just from your posts you sound like a spoiled rich kid who wanted a puppy but when parents bought it too late he didn't want it anymore :D
