how long will the ps3 be a viable machine?

I imagine it'll see some version of the "big" games for another year or two after the PS4 is released. Then it'll just be the yearly iterations of FIFA etc that it gets, as well as whatever weird/cheap games decide to release on it.

Speaking of PS2, I was in WH Smiths earlier, they had Dual Shock 2s for £5 brand new. No games (for any platform) in sight though, wonder how long they've been sitting around for.

I've actually just bought a PS3 (my 3rd one, on and off) after ditching the Xbox 360. There are several exclusives I'd like to play (Last of Us, GoW Ascension, GT6) plus I'll get GTAV on it.

Also wanted to get into the Sony groove in readiness for PS4.

To me the 360 really did feel at the end of it's lifecycle, however for some reason the PS3 still feels like it's got some legs in it.

That's how I feel. All I play now on 360 is my (usually weekly) dose of BF3 and it's been that way for a year.
PS3 though there will still be between 3-5 games I want before the end of 2013. Beyond, Kingdom Hearts and i'll try Arkham Origins too.

Funny enough, mate never owned a PS3 but now has my spare one for the remainder of this gen. He appears to be done with 360 too and is playing some PS3 exclusives like Heavy Rain and Ni No Kuni, Last of Us etc.

Don't Sony have a 10 year support plan for their consoles?

The ps3 has a monster of a CPU, most games are ported from the Xbox so they only use 4 of the 7 cores it has and only a few software companies, mainly the Sony owned ones can be bothered to use its power to the full.

With Sony's big push into independent devs, I won't be surprise if some of them will start/keep making games for the ps3 and more homebrew games are made, thou its said that the ps3 is a pig to program for.

It's countries like brazil that keeps older consoles going, it kept the master system alive and now the ps2 a live for years after. Ps4 or xbone is a first world problem. I'm in no rush to sell the two ps3s I have, even if I use them only as a media centre.
