As you guys probably know last year I ran my own business, it was decent pay but just too stressful.

Before that I worked in Customer Service / 1st line Tech for a major mobile phone retailer, and nearly 2 years after leaving that job I'm 2 and a half grand down per year and in 2nd line Tech for an ISP.

I look for jobs most nights, I love what I do now but I can't see any way to move up within the company.

As my partner looks after our 14 month old she doesn't work at the moment, but is going back to work this month or the next. Getting to work costs me £200 in fuel alone - it's 80 miles per day of commuting.
With tax credits and child benefit included we literally have zero cash for anything left.

No idea how to break out of this cycle, it's damn depressing.

Have you exhausted all the possibilities for getting promoted within your present company?

If yes, how about looking for a slightly better or similar job based nearer to you?

Could then have potential for more pay and cut down on the commute expense/time at the same time.

Move nearer to work or get a job nearer to you. If you have no chance of promotion then do everything you can to get as much training or at least exposure to things to learn new skills as you can. The world doesn't owe you anything and you won't get a higher paid job just because you want one.

Just a glimmer of hope to others in the same position - I knuckled down at work, and now have my own team and I'm involved with some fairly big projects.

I also set up an online store selling MG Rover parts and have educated my partner on how to run it, so we're not on my income.

Now totally off benefits, I'm back in a relatively nice car, and things are generally better. Keep at it when you feel low, your time will come. :)
