I searched for autorip on here but couldn't find any threads. If anyone has purchased any cd's from Amazon over the last few years you now have it available to you as a ripped MP3 version on Amazon Cloud

Amazon today launched its AutoRip service for UK customers. Amazon customers in France, Germany and Italy got AutoRip functionality earlier this week. People who have bought CDs, cassettes and vinyl recordings from Amazon from as far back as 1999 (2000 in France) will have MP3 versions of all the music they have bought added to their Amazon Cloud Player automatically, for free.

Bloody brilliant I say!

i just logged into cloud player and it told me it had found 9 CDs from my history. i've already got them ripped to flac and i also have vorbis copies for my portable but this is still a very impressive service.

i thought it would be a few more but thinking about it, i suspect most of my purchases are from the marketplace and not amazon itself.

Sweeeet, not that I want the cd(but it can work out significantly cheaper) what Kbps is it?

Just had a look killer albums cd £5.17
Or mp3 album £8.49
Or 12x89p which is £10.68 for all the mp3s

Not that I often buy full albums, but this is indeed great news.

Surely this contributes to copyright theft though.

I bought a couple of CDs for my mum and dad last Christmas; they have the CDs, but I can access them via Autorip :D

a) do you listen to the same music as your mum and dad? :p
b) you can always delete them.
c) report it to the RIAA.:D

From the amazon mp3 store q&a

Here's more information about music files from the Amazon MP3 Store:
Bit Rate Where possible, we encode our MP3 files using variable bit rates for optimal audio quality and file sizes, aiming at an average of 256 kilobits per second (kbps). Using a variable bit rate allows us to allocate a higher bit rate to the more complex sections of music files while using a smaller bit rate for the less complex sections. The average of these rates is then calculated to produce an average bit rate for the entire file that represents the overall sound quality. Some of our content is encoded using a constant bit rate of 256 kbps. This content will have the same excellent audio quality at a slightly larger file size.

It is such a great idea. I logged on and found the CDs I have bought in the past. As a matter of curiosity I bought a couple more and they pretty much instantly become available to listen to.

Now I do like MP3s bit prefer the actual physical product. With this you have the best of both worlds: instant music for the ADHD kiddie side of you and the physical product to add to tje collection.

Just checked, and the same is true for music I've bought as Christmas presents for my sister and brother in law in the past. Unfortunately this now means I have a Michael Buble album in my list of albums!

Oh the shame .....

I'll trade you. After a spurt a couple of years ago of acting as the middle man for people at work since I have Amazon prime (you'd be amazed how quick it pays for itself this way) and Christmas presents for my family I'm now the "proud" owner of 3 High school musical albums, a John Barrowman album, the Power Rangers soundtrack and most worryingly a Culture club album that we bought as a joke present for someone a couple of years ago :(

time to go through the cloudplayer with a scythe.

I think it is a valid point made about items bought as gifts. I've now got some stuff in my my cloud that realistically I shouldn't do.

Good strategy though I suppose, as it will encourage me to buy all gifts for people from amazon and not much different from people cheekily ripping a cd before gifting it.

One (understandable) annoyance is that a lot of our cds will have been bought under my wife's account rather than mine so there is now a 'split account' in terms of the cloud.
